Serbia Awaits Results of Media Ownership Probe :: Balkan Insight

Aleksandar Vucic, Vice President of the Serbian government, said the probe will reveal the whole structure of the media ownership in the three daily newspapers Politika, Vecernje Novosti and Dnevnik.

?We have discovered that different political structures are behind the murky media businesses in these three companies," Vucic said, adding that the results would be made public at the end of the month.

?The people involved in this case have done misdeeds with the help of state officials, including Serbian diplomats in some countries,? he added.

The company linking all three media outlets is the German Media Group, WAZ, which is now withdrawing from the region and selling its assets in the Balkans.

Politika, Serbia's oldest newspaper, is currently half owned by the state and half by Moscow-based OOO East Media Group.

But until it sold its stake on July 18, WAZ owned half of the daily newspaper.

The change in ownership angered Serbia's ruling Progressive Party, which accused the former ruling Democratic Party of having masterminded the sale without following due process.

The Journalists' Association of Serbia, UNS, meanwhile, has linked East Media Group to another Serb, Miroslav Bogicevic, a Democratic Party donor, and to Dusan Petrovic, Serbia's former agriculture minister.

Dnevnik, daily based in the city of Novi Sad, is still part-owned by WAZ, which has 55 per cent of the shares.

WAZ announced its intention to withdraw from the Balkans for economic reasons in June 2010. That year, WAZ sold off some of its main newspapers in Romania and Bulgaria.

In January this year, WAZ sold its three Macedonian newspapers, Dnevnik, Utrinski Vesnik and Vest, to Orka, a local company owned by Orce Kamcev.
