BERLIN (AP) ? Chancellor Angela Merkel apologized Thursday to the relatives of 10 people, mostly immigrants, believed to have been killed by a neo-Nazi group that eluded German authorities' detection for more than a decade.
The National Socialist Underground group ? its name a clear reference to the Nazis' full name, the National Socialists ? is suspected of killing eight people of Turkish origin and a Greek man between 2000 and 2006, as well as a policewoman in 2007.

"For years, some relatives themselves unfairly faced suspicion ? that is particularly oppressive," Merkel said. "I ask for forgiveness for that."
The neo-Nazi group's activities only came to light last November when two suspected founders, Uwe Boehnhardt and Uwe Mundlos, were found dead following an apparent murder-suicide as police closed in on them after a bank robbery, and a third alleged core member, Beate Zschaepe, turned herself in.
Police found the murdered policewoman's service weapon in a burning mobile home where the two bodies were found, then discovered a pistol used in the businessmen's killings at a burned-out apartment used by the group.
Investigators found copies of a propaganda video at the apartment, featuring pictures of the victims and a cartoon image of the Pink Panther standing next to a placard proclaiming "Germany Tour, 9th Turk Shot."
Merkel said she regularly has to view videos made by hostage-takers and the like, but "I have never yet in my work seen anything more inhuman."
Concern over far-right violence has flared periodically in Germany over the past two decades, but the country hasn't previously seen anything like the campaign of murder attributed to the National Socialist Underground.
"Reports about unscrupulous far-right perpetrators sometimes shake us, and they dominate the headlines for a few days," Merkel said. "But often enough we perceive such incidents as a side issue ? we forget quickly, much too quickly."
Thursday's event, which was followed by a minute of silence across Germany, was initiated by former President Christian Wulff. Merkel stepped in after he resigned last week in a corruption scandal.

"For 11 years, we couldn't even be victims with a clean conscience," she said.

Spears is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can identify her daughter's alleged attackers.
Sources told TMZ, which has a photo of Messer post alleged attack, that the reality TV personality didn't know the women, but plans to file a report today. Neither she nor Calvert have tweeted about the incident.

?There?s still mold. There?s still a bunch of mold in here,? homeowner Tiffany Jones said.
Jones and Starks have three children ? twins Aadyan and Honor, who turn 3 years old in March; and little Zaryia, who will turn 2 years old also in March. Jones and all of the children suffer from asthma, and Aadyan also has autism. So for the family, a healthy home is paramount.
?I couldn?t image someone else?s family going through this and being this patient for all this time,? Starks said.
For more than 80 days now the family has been living in temporary housing, refusing to move back into their home.
?We just wanted the job done right, and i feel that they just didn?t do that at all,? Jones said.
Jones and Starks volunteered for a research study conducted by National Jewish Health. The consent form provided to the family calls it a ?Healthy Homes: Healthy Kids? study. Offering ?no guarantees or promises,? but with the purpose of ?improving your home environment? to ?improve you or your family?s health.?
Northeast Denver Housing Center is a partner in the project along with Denver Urban Renewal Authority.
?It upsets me because I just feel like nobody cares. I just feel like they don?t care; like honestly do not care about our family,? Starks said.
Because after the work was done, and their case was officially closed, Jones and Starks strongly believed mold still existed.
?Even on your finger you have enough moisture to have it read in this case 24.7 percent moisture content,? Bob Woellner with Quest Environmental said.
Removing the moisture and its source is key in mold remediation,? according to Woellner.
?Anything less than 12 percent is considered to be dry,? Woellner said.
So with the moisture meter Woellner checked the bathroom and behind the laundry room.
?Pull up a tile, there?s a loose tile here. The wood and the grout underneath it is 40 plus moisture content. ?I would not want to move back until all the work was completed, which means making sure the sources of moisture are eliminated.?
But the only way to confirm mold remains in the home is to test it. Weecycle Environmental Consulting based in Boulder did the initial mold tests back in July of 2011. CBS4 hired them again.
?I?d say we still have an issue,? Weecycle Environmental Consulting President
Judy Sawitsky said. ?At this point I would say this is not a particularly healthy house to live in.?
One-hundred-twelve northeast Denver families have been enrolled in the National Jewish Health study. Sixty of those homes required remediation work and 40 of those 60 involved mold.
According to Dr. Mike Van Dyke of National Jewish the Jones and Starks home is the only home that continues to have issues.
?Every indication we had by multiple individual reports was that this job was fixed,? Van Dyke said.
But then Van Dyke reviewed the latest mold test results. He said the cause of the mold in the home was from a leaky water heater, a leak under the kitchen sink, and a leak behind the shower surround in the bathroom.
It?s clear the work is not complete.
?Oh we?re definitely committed to seeing what needs to be done and try to see where that mold is coming from,? Van Dyke said.
It?s a step closer.
?We can?t live like that,? Jones said.
National Jewish has been in contact with the family and plans to inspect the home this week. Anything they identify as a quality issue related to the work that had been performed will be corrected.
National Jewish says it will do its best to figure out the mold issue, but it cannot promise it will pay for all the problems.

Objective:colorectal cancer is one of the most lethal malignant tumors,and the primary causes of this lethality include tumor recurrence and metastasis.Dysfunction of adhesion molecule and destruction of cell adhesion are the initial steps of tumor Metasta sis.E-cadherin,a member of cadherin family,is a transmembrane glycoptein which connects adjacent cells through Ca2+dependent homophilic interaction.As the major epirhelial adhesion molecule,the loss of E-cadherin is reported to be associated with tumor dedifferentiation and metastasis.P120ctn is a catenin whose direct binding to the juxtamembrane domain of classical cadherins suggests a role in regulating cell-cell adhesion.Abnormal expression of cadherin\catenin complex may affects related cell proliferation?differetiation and biological behaviour,which induce tumor?s invasion and metastasis.The expression of p120ctn and E-cadherin can be regarded as valuable indicators for evaluating biological behavior and the prognosis of colon carcinoma.Methods:immunohistochemical method was used to detect the P120ctn and E-cadherin expression in 71 cases with human colorectal cancer after surgical treatment,which to discusses relations with colorectal cancer. Four new drugs will change prostate cancer care | Machines Like Us
After a decade and a half of near stagnation, four new drugs could help make advanced prostate cancer a chronic illness instead of a terminal disease, a leading Colorado prostate cancer expert says.
"It's not just chemotherapy. The drugs have different and innovative methods of action. One is a bone protective agent; another's a more effective hormone agent; another is radiotherapy; and the final one is the first drug tested for cancer immunotherapy," says E. David Crawford, MD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and head of urologic oncology at University of Colorado Hospital.
"Even without the addition of any more drugs, we may now have the tools that in combination will allow us to extend the survival prognosis of a prostate cancer patient long enough to make prostate cancer a disease a patient is more likely to die with than from," Crawford says.
Along with Thomas Flaig, MD, Crawford describes these advances in prostate cancer treatment in a recent review for the journal Oncology.
First is the drug Denosumab, which Crawford says, "has three uses in protecting the bones of prostate cancer patients." It can prevent bone fractures in patients with existing bone metastasis; it can prevent osteoporosis in patients whose calcium is depleted as a side-effect of hormone therapy; and (pending FDA approval) it has been shown to hold off the occurrence of bone metastasis for an average of four months in patients whose spiking PSA scores predict the likely onset of bone involvement.
Second is the drug Alpharadin, which is one of a novel and exciting class of "radiopharmaceuticals"?drugs that emit radiation and allow doctors to precisely deliver radiation to tumor sites. In the case of Alpharadin, it emits alpha rather than beta particles, which allows more precise tumor targeting of bone metastasis sites with less collateral damage to surrounding bone marrow.
Third, the drug Prostvac is the first "immunotherapy" drug used for the treatment of cancer. The drug acts like a vaccine, priming the immune system to recognize and thus fight against prostate cancer cells. In a phase II clinical trial of 125 patients, the drug extended the median survival time from 16.6 to 25.1 months.
Finally, the drug Abiraterone Acetate completely suppresses the body's ability to make testosterone, which many prostate cancers need to grow (as opposed to previous drugs, which hoped to out-compete testosterone with estrogen, or imperfectly controlled testosterone production).
Crawford notes that these drugs are being approved for use only after more established therapies have failed and hopes that in coming years science may accelerate the use of these drugs to first-line therapies.
"Before we just had hormone therapy, then we got chemo, and each therapy we added packed on another couple months of survival. Now with these news drugs we're tacking on even more time. The light at the end of the tunnel is the hope that we'll turn this into a chronic disease and now we might have the tools that in some combination will do it," Crawford says.

Because for some reason, I?m supposed to have learned a thing or two after a couple of decades of show biz success and survival. I was there to pass along some wisdom. That said, somebody asked me about ?leave behinds.?
Wait. Speak up. What?s that, you ask?
A ?leave behind? is something a writer might give the buyer after a pitch meeting. Usually a blurb or some kind of outline that reflects what the writer just spent the past twenty minutes drilling into the producer or executive?s ear.
The student asking the question was concerned that ending the pitch by giving away something written down was an invitation for the recipient to steal.
?Look. It probably hurts more to hear this than for me to say it,? I said. ?But if you?re going to have any success as a writer in this biz, you?re going to get ripped off. That?s just a fact.?
Judging by all the gob-smacked faces, I may as well have stood up, flapped my arms, and squawked my affection for anesthesia-free colonoscopies.
?I know. Getting stolen from is supposed to be a form of flattery,? I continued. ?But that?s a buncha crap. It sucks. It?s never fun. But it happens all the time.?
Okay blogfans. Here?s a SPOILER ALERT: If you?re planning to make a splash in show biz but imagine that it?s populated by characters from the kinder parts of Mary Poppins, please turn back now, don?t read on, and politely exit while whistling the opening bars to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
To find success in the Land of Milk and Movies, writers must write, pitch, and sell. And if the writer is any good at his craft, there are wolves in sheeps? clothing waiting to take a bite of your good work and sell it as their own. Like this one:
I was at lunch with a producer I?d come to know through one of my movies. Sometime between the entree and my third refill of Diet Coke, he began talking to me about an idea he had for a movie. Now, this ?idea? was more like snippet of information about a special unit of cops serving in the NYPD. There were no characters and zero story. Just a thirty-second recitation of this particular cop detail and their dirty assignment.
Usually, I nod and say something like, ?That?s a good start. Lemme simmer on it for awhile.?
Instead, during this particular slice of my day, I?d already grown bored with the lunch conversation and this guy?s nonstop tales of scamming sloppy supermodel seconds off his former boss?s conquests.
So keying off the producer?s faint description, I deftly spun a tale. Why? Because I?m a writer and that?s what I do. Making up stories has become second nature. In twenty minutes hence, I created two dynamic characters, three solid acts, and even a surprise ending.
Not that it?s always that easy. I?ll sometimes toil for years over half-assed ideas in search of a getaway car. And other times, stories arrive almost instantly like gifts from heaven, fully formed and barely in need of tweaking.
This was one of those days. From idea to characters to story to a perfectly pitchable movie before the check even arrived. The producer dropped his Platinum card, shook my hand goodbye, and promised to follow up with me the next day.
True to his word, the producer called me the following afternoon.
?So here?s what I did,? said the producer. ?After our lunch yesterday, I drove over to Fox and sold that story I told you.?
?You what?? I asked, wondering if there was some kind of infection that had flooded my ear canals with crazy talk.
?Sold the story. Set it up as a development deal at Fox.?
?Without informing me?? I asked, incredulity raising my voice.
?No worries,? he said. ?You?re on top of my list of writers for it.?
?Top of your list?? I?d quickly moved from incredulous to steaming. ?Are you kidding me? I?m the only writer you can possibly do this with.?
?I believe you. And you?re obviously my first choice. But the studio?s gonna want to hear more than one take. That means a bunch of writers.?
?How dare you!? I shouted. ?It?s my story! You had no right to sell it without me in the room!?
?Hey. It was my idea and I paid for lunch,? was all the asshole producer pretended he needed to say to settle the issue.
?And if I knew you were gonna f**k me over I woulda ordered more than the lousy Cobb salad.?
His logic was tortured and numbing. As if anyone with a willingness to flash an American Express card coupled with describing to a writer the distinctive features of a DeLorean awarded him the intellectual property rights to Back to the Future.
I was incensed then and, as I beat these words into a blog, I remain pretty peeved. But because I hadn?t had time to register the story with the WGA I didn?t have a legal leg to stand on. The S.O.B. beat me to a defense by rushing from our lunch to the gilded gates of a movie studio with an open wallet. My only remedy was to gin my agent and lawyer into gang-calling the studio and, in all likelihood, the action would quickly devolve into such a who-came-up-with-what twist that the primary byproduct would be gallons of bad blood spilled between myself and the innocent movie studio. It was either that or lick my wounds, write off the unscrupulous bastard, and learn to keep my mouth shut.
It wasn?t first time I?d been stolen from. It wouldn?t be the last. Because the truth is that the job demands a certain measure of creative risk. These dangers must be accepted as potential job hazards. And no insurance policy or writers? collective can totally insulate an ambitious word merchant from every cunning shark in the Show Biz Sea.
In the end, I probably could have fought my way into the studio and demanded my screenwriting services be attached the story. Yet something about beginning a movie project forged with an already malignant distrust for the producer made me too ill to put up a fight.
