Jeremy London to Be Charged in Wife Attack

Troubled actor Jeremy London will be charged with domestic violence following an alleged attack on his spouse in Palm Springs last month, reports say.

Area cops were on the lookout for London to question him about the fight, during which Jeremy allegedly injured estranged wife Melissa Cunningham.

The ex-couple was fighting over custody of their son, when London flew off the handle, then took off. He's communicated with police via his lawyers.

The Riverside County D.A.'s office has made a decision to charge London with misdemeanor domestic violence. If convicted, he may face a year in jail.

A rep for Jeremy said, "The allegation is false and no such abuse occurred."

"It is unfortunate that the Riverside DA's Office has elected to reward Melissa's malicious behaviour and disregard the facts regarding the incident."

Beyonce Fans Weigh In On Baby's Anticipated Arrival1676552

From the birth date to the sex of the baby, fans share their thoughts with MTV News.
By John Mitchell

It's almost here, and no, we're not talking about New Year's. Here at MTV we're waiting patiently for an even bigger event: the birth of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby. And depending on whom you ask, Queen Bey's little prince or princess might be here sooner than any of us thought. According to various media reports, Beyoncé may even be in labor right now.

Rumors that the 4 songstress, who was one of MTV's top Newsmakers of 2011, was set to give birth Wednesday (December 28) first surfaced on Media Takeout, with two nurses at New York's Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital allegedly telling the celebrity gossip site that they were informed last night that a "celebrity VIP" who had reserved half of the hospital's luxury labor and delivery floor would be arriving to give birth Wednesday. There has been no confirmation that the rumored VIP is indeed Beyoncé, and representatives for the star did not immediately respond when asked for comment. Fans of the "Countdown" singer and her hip-hop mogul husband are starting to get very excited about baby Jayonce. When MTV News took to the streets of New York to ask Bey's fans their thoughts on when they expect the baby to make its debut and whether it will be a boy or a girl, they had plenty to say. Most of Bey's fans told MTV they expected the baby to be born in January, with one perhaps astute fan zeroing in on New Year's, saying, "I think Beyoncé's baby will be born sometime in January, maybe on the first." We found only one dissenter on the chilly streets of NYC, and he seemed to have the best knowledge of past public statements from the couple, including an early-September interview with Beyoncé that announced that the baby was actually due in February. "I trust Jay Z, I think he's a good guy," the fan said. "Him and Beyoncé are a good couple, so they wouldn't lie to the public. So Beyoncé's baby is going to be born in February." And nearly all of the fans we surveyed believe the power couple is expecting a baby girl. Perhaps they caught wind of de facto auntie Kelly Rowland's slip of the lip on a London red carpet in early November, where the former Destiny's Child singer said, "I have no idea what I'm going to buy BeyoncĂ© at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible. She won't be spoiled, but she will be very well looked-after." One fan was particularly excited for a baby girl because she hoped the babe picked up Beyoncé's good genes. "Hopefully a girl," she told MTV News. "Probably because I'm a fan of Beyoncé's looks." One thing all could agree on was that Jay and Bey's bundle of joy would jump right to the top of the celebrity baby power list. "A power baby, obviously," one fan said, while another added, "It's gonna be a pretty cool baby, that's for sure. Probably gonna run New York City by the time he's 13 or 14." Do you think Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby will be a boy or a girl? Let us know in the comments!

Gold futures or stocks? Analyst picks stocks.

Gold futures fall below $1,600 an ounce. Noted economist Gartman sees stocks outperforming gold futures.

On a day in which?gold prices?hovered around $1,600 an ounce, widely followed investor?Dennis Gartman?said there were better plays around.

??I think one is going to do better by owning steel, owning copper, owning railroads, owning Apple, than one will doing being long of the gold market,? he said Tuesday. ?Up until August of last year, gold seriously outperformed equities.?

?U.S. gold futures?dipped 0.7 percent to close at $1,594.80 an ounce, while?spot gold?closed down $12 at $1,592.96.

The noted economist and editor of?The Gartman Letter?said on ?Fast Money? that the precious metal continued to lag and reiterated his neutral view on the trade.

?Gartman made headlines when he announced that he had?sold all the gold in his personal account, a move he said was justified.

??Gold has begun to seriously underperform equities, and I moved, rather shockingly, to the point of being out of the gold market and long of equities against the euro, and it?s been a wonderful trade,? he said.

?Last week, Gartman predicted that the?S&P 500 would outperform gold and global stocks.

?For now, it would take significant trading action to get him back in the gold trade.

??We?ve seen reversals on charts before where you make a new low and then close higher on the day,? he said. ?We?re going to have to see that sort of price action rather than price itself, or rather than some event.?

Reports: Doni admits fixing Serie B matches

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:32 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

CREMONA, Italy (AP) -Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly admitted helping to fix Serie B matches involving his team last season. He said he agreed to go along with the scam because his team was not supposed to lose.

Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an ongoing investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games.

After five days of solitary confinement, Doni was permitted to meet with his lawyer Friday and was then questioned by prosecutors.

"Yes, I knew about the fix for Atalanta-Piacenza. I gave my approval and I bet," Doni is quoted as saying by Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "I also tried to do the same thing for the match with Ascoli. But they were all personal initiatives, I'm not part of any organization. ... The club didn't know anything."

Atalanta beat Piacenza 3-0, while the Ascoli vs. Atalanta match finished 1-1. Details have not yet emerged as to precisely what Doni did in the fixed games.

In June, 16 people were arrested as part of the first wave of the inquiry, and Doni was then placed under investigation.

Doni said at the time that he was innocent but in August he was banned from football for 3 1/2 years by the Italian football federation's disciplinary committee, and Atalanta - which was promoted to Serie A for this season - was given a six-point penalty.

"I said yes to the fixes because Atalanta benefited," Doni said, according to the Gazzetta. "I would have never listened to anyone who offered me money to make my squad lose. I made a mistake and now I can't even look at myself in the mirror because it makes me think about all the pain I've caused my family and the fans.

"The relegation to Serie B hurt me and that's why I accepted these offers," Doni added. "By winning we were sure to be promoted."

The latest arrests come five years after another major match-fixing scandal - restricted to club and referee officials but not players - resulted in Juventus getting relegated to Serie B for a season, plus point penalties for Lazio, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Reggina in Serie A.

The prosecutors in Cremona, who are leading the current investigation, have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America and that has allegedly been in operation for more than 10 years.

Three Serie A matches from last season are also under investigation: Brescia vs. Bari, Brescia vs. Lecce and Napoli vs. Sampdoria.

A phone call was reportedly intercepted between Doni and Ravenna goalkeeping coach Nicola Santoni - who was also arrested - in which the pair discuss tampering with Santoni's iPhone, which had been confiscated by police in June.

Doni was arrested on suspicion of attempting to destroy evidence. He was due to be released from prison Saturday, but will remain under house arrest.

Others arrested Monday include former Inter Milan and Roma player Luigi Sartor, former Serie B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza and Filippo Carobbio of Spezia.

Sticking a nose in Santa's business | Susan Polgar Chess Daily ...

Sticking a nose in Santa?s business
LISA SUHAY
http://hamptonroads.com

THE THREE-story clapboard house with the spiderweb-like cracks running across every peeling, painted surface sat at the end of a dead-end street in Portsmouth, looking abandoned. The homemade wreath on the front door was the only clue that inside the house, two children still held hope that Santa would find their door.

Santa doesn?t have this address; neither does the Joy Fund, or Head Start. The only reason my family had the address was because I?d caught the message among the throngs of postings on a local site called Freecycle, where people normally offer used items they no longer need or post requests for items. This request was simple: ?Wanted Christmas gifts for 7 yr old girl and 8 yr old boy.?

As the mother of an 8-yearold boy, I gave the message a second look. And the girl tugged at me, too, because, as the mother of four boys, I have never shopped in the pink aisle. My husband had asked me to find a way for our sons to do something for others this holiday season that was ?real and tangible.?

It?s delicate work sticking your nose into somebody else?s business, even when they open the door a crack and call out for help. So when I wrote to the poster and asked for some details, I was afraid of insulting him. He replied, ?I can?t come pick-up because I have no mode of transportation at all and live far from public transportation.

My girl likes baby dolls, strollers, and my son likes learning toys like speak and learn etc. must make noise and he must be able to hear it. Let me know. And if you can spare a tree that would be great.? Now we have the mental image of two children, one who seems to have some disability and needs to be able to hear a learning toy. And there?s no tree, either.

I have previously written about how difficult it is to make ends meet with four sons, so not much Christmas was coming to Portsmouth if I had to do it on my own. But that?s what Facebook friends are for. My friend Terry and her mother supplied an artificial tree and all the trimmings, plus some amazing toys. My friend Peggy, who is writing a children?s novel series about Santa, also rushed into the gap with us.

There was quite a tidy haul, including some plastic candy canes filled with Hershey?s kisses, real candy canes, too, and giant chocolate coins. I worried and worried we might be giving dessert to children who?d had no supper. We do all we can and hope for the best. The kids and I wrapped everything and tagged it all ?From Santa.?

My husband drove the whole tribe to bring Christmas to Portsmouth. I would love to have this happily end with a dose of Bing Crosby singing, but this is the real world where children don?t get holidays from poverty, hunger and cold. Like Santa, I never met the children, but our whole family, plus my son?s girlfriend, filed into the cold, narrow doorway and helped the dad stash the gifts up a dilapidated staircase that led to an upper unit that is unfinished and unrented by their landlord. ?This is where I always have my Santa stash,? he said. The stairwell was completely empty. He was a nice man. Friendly.

After the kids and my spouse were back in the van, I ran back to the door and knocked again. I had to know if the children had food. I asked if they were in the free breakfast and lunch programs. No. ?I?m waiting on Social Services for that and any other help I can get,? he explained. I learned they are actually a family of eight (the others are ?too old for Santa?) and no, they did not have food.

When I asked what he did for a living, he told me he has a master?s degree in information technology. ?Real CSI-type stuff, too,? he said, but he?s been unemployed for more than 18 months. He is doing tattoos at home to make money. He can do construction, too. His wife, he said, is unable to work.

I did not pry further because the gifts that keep on giving are privacy and dignity. He also has absolutely no teeth, which is not helping the job hunt at all. Holidays come and go, be it with a manger and a man in a red suit or with candles (nine or seven, depending on Hanukkah or Kwanzaa).

Our hearts fill, even as our pockets empty. My friend Kevin, hearing that this Portsmouth family had no food, bought and delivered sacks of groceries to their house. It?s true, one person can?t save the world. But anyone who thinks one little thing doesn?t make any difference has never been in bed with a mosquito.

My hope is that in the new year, if someone asks for even a little bit of help, you will start a buzz among friends and stick your nose in where it will make a difference.

East Africa famine: Somali prime minister denies food shortage

The United Nations says that 250,000 Somalis are suffering from famine in three regions including Mogadishu, a fact that Abdiweli Mohammed Ali, who leads Somalia?s officially recognised government, has denied.

"I don?t believe there?s a famine in Mogadishu. Absolutely no," he told The Daily Telegraph. "You know the aid agencies became an entrenched interest group and they say all kind of things that they want to say.?

Mr Ali leads a government that depends almost completely on outside donations. Our reporter visited a UN feeding centre in the city, where he found hundreds of starving women with their children seeking food.

Despite the prime minister's claims, Britain today announced it will be providing more than 9,000 tonnes of food supplies and medicines to drought-ravaged regions in the Horn of Africa this Christmas.

South Africa: Rhino horns poisoned to thwart poachers

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? The owner of an exotic game reserve in South Africa has taking a drastic step in a bid to prevent rhino poaching: he has injected his rhinos' horns with poison.

Damian Vergnaud, owner of?Inverdoorn reserve near Cape Town, said he approached scientists and a vet to work towards finding a substance that would deter poachers.

A record number of rhinos have been killed for their horns this year in South Africa, which has more rhinos than any other country.?The poaching is fueled by demand for rhino horns in Vietnam?and other Asian countries, where they are used in traditional medicine despite the fact that experts say they have no medicinal value.

More from GlobalPost: South Africa: rhino poaching at record high

Vergnaud told the South African Press Association that he decided not to dehorn his rhinos, like some game reserves have done, because it is "very painful" and "traumatizing" for the animals.

"I really wanted to create a different defense system," he told SAPA.

In tests,?Vergnaud injected his rhinos' horns with ?a combination of three non-lethal substances: one with a terrible taste, one to make a horn visible on an X-ray machine, and one that is a dye, the same dye used to foil cash-in-transit robbers.?

"We hope that it will inform poachers, it [poaching at the reserve] is going to be a waste of time," Vergnaud said.

Vergnaud has offered to share his home-brewed poacher repellent with other game reserve owners looking to protect this endangered animal.

Rajoy sworn in as Spanish prime minister (AP)

MADRID ? Conservative Mariano Rajoy was sworn in as Spain's new prime minister Wednesday and prepared to announce the names of the Cabinet ministers he hopes will help him lift Spain out of its severe economic crisis.

Rajoy took the oath on the bible before King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia in the Zarzuela Palace on Madrid's outskirts. He then went to the Moncloa palace government headquarters to complete the transfer of power to the new government.

He replaces Socialist party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who had been in office since 2004.

Rajoy was to return to the royal palace Wednesday evening to inform the monarch of his choice of ministers before making them public.

Rajoy's Popular Party won a landslide victory in Nov. 20 elections on promises to lift Spain out of economic turmoil.

Spain has a eurozone-high unemployment rate of 21.5 percent, a swollen deficit and a stalled economy after a near two-year recession triggered by the collapse of a real estate bubble in 2009.

Rajoy has given no clues as to who he will name to the key portfolio of economy, although Popular Party economy spokesman Cristobal Montoro has been heavily tipped for the post.

Spain has already made sharp cuts to its national spending and introduced several reforms under Zapatero but the measures have so far failed to boost the economy to any great extent.

The country's borrowing costs spiraled amid fears it might need a bailout like Greece, Ireland and Portugal but in recent weeks they have begun to slip back.

Rajoy, however, on Monday pledged more austerity cuts totaling euro16.5 billion ($21.6 billion).

The conservative leader promised reforms to encourage companies to hire and tax breaks for small and medium-sized firms that make up the bulk of the economy. He also intends trimming government personnel with a hiring freeze for most civil servant groups.

He is expected to announce further measures Friday after his first weekly Cabinet meeting.

A property registrar by training, Rajoy held four ministerial portfolios in the governments of Jose Maria Aznar between 1996 and 2004.

He was the party's candidate twice before being elected in November.
