Sudan: Group says images show burned villages

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? A U.S. based advocacy group says that satellite images show 13 villages were intentionally burned in Sudan.

The Satellite Sentinel Project said Friday that the images show that the government of Sudan deliberately burned 13 villages in the war-torn border region of South Kordofan from Nov. 17-22.

Sudanese troops are fighting rebels who were once aligned with South Sudan. When South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year, the rebels were placed in the Sudan half of the partition. The two sides have been fighting over the last year.

John Bradshaw, executive director of the advocacy group the Enough Project that supports the satellite program, said the images are visual proof that Sudan is violating the laws of war and carrying out indiscriminate attacks.

Lea Wait, here.?As many of you know, I?m a born and bred (fourth generation, actually) antique dealer. My great-grandfather immigrated to Boston from Edinburgh and imported antiques, Irish linen,?glass, and Belleek,?Scottish embroideries and other upscale furnishings for his (short-lived) shop on Beacon Hill. His oldest daughter, my grandmother, became an antique doll and toy dealer. And her daughter, my mother, and I went into the business in 1977 specializing in antique prints.?My aunt and uncle were also antique dealers, with a special interest in Bennington pottery and mourning-related Victoriana, and my father was a nationally known numismatist. Although I?m now focusing on my writing and only selling prints?out of my home by appointment and at a?few shows each year,?the protagonist in my mystery series, Maggie Summer, carries on the family tradition: she?s an antique print dealer, too, and is still active in the business.?

In addition to?antique prints,?at various times in my life I?ve had my own collections. In my early teens I started collecting?post cards and political memorabilia;?at older ages I searched for?first editions of favorite authors,?Victorian stick pins, theatrical memorabilia, and antiques related to the Asian countries where my children were born. Now that I?m a full-time writer, I?ve found myself gathering a small collection of antiques related to reading and writing.

Collecting books ? autographed, or?first editions, or small print runs, or, preferably, all three ? is an?choices for those?who love books.?Anyone interested in learning more about that end of the business should read John Dunning?s?wonderful mysteries about an antiquarian book dealer.??

As a dealer, I?ve had customers who collected prints or paintings of one or two favorite?authors.?One man?had filled his home with china, glass and pottery?related to Shakespeare and his plays.?

On a smaller scale, I?ve had fun collecting?book ends and stands, usually?made of?brass or?marble,?made between 1880 and 1930. They?re not too expensive, very decorative ? and who doesn?t need book ends??

Statues of all sizes (in pottery, china, marble or brass) of people reading are out there. Some people collect?lamps specifically designed for reading.?

But?most of the items I?ve collected, perhaps not surprisingly,?involve writing. Not?pens, although that?s an entire collecting field for those interested.?But I do have one wonderful pewter inkwell that?holds two pens ? in the ears of the devil. I often wonder just who first imagined this design, and what?the pens of those who?ve owned that inkstand have written over the years ? Doesn?t it look like an inkstand Poe might have had on his desk?

(And, by the way, in my study I have a small oil painting of Edgar himself?that my husband bought for me at an auction. Love auctions ? and my husband!)??

were portable desks, or ?writing boxes.?? I?ve pictured one here; the wooden box, in case this an elegant curly maple one,?opens to show a writing surface, and, under that, spaces to hold writing materials.?

I also have several small books (2? x 3?) in wood or brass that were used to hold stamps (the wooden one) or matches (the brass books) and are very decorative.? And a large brass book that contains sheets of blotting paper ? a?necessity in earlier times.?

Boxes in the shape of books can also be found in all sorts of materials, from metal, that held cookies and candies for the holidays, to wooden ones, that held Bibles, to books made to conceal hiding places in bookcases, to ?book boxes? of wood that are ingenious puzzles, made to conceal money or jewelry.

For me, pieces of the past incorporated into my home and life add depth and, I hope, perhaps, a little of the wisdom and heritage and?stories of those who came before us.

If you?re interested in finding similar treasures, check out antique shows or co-op malls (groups of dealers showing together) or shops in your area. Be open to possibilities. Antiques can surprise you. And it?s always more fun to look when you?re on a quest, so asking for??book-related items? or ?inkwells? or ?book boxes? or whatever intriques you, makes the trip more interesting.?And?don?t be afraid to ask questions. Antique dealers would love to tell you about what is on their shelves.?

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Voiamo has just taken the veil off of Globalgig, a new roaming service that'll let road warriors consume up to 5GB through a monthly contract and the purchase of a $119 MiFi dongle. So far, it will only be available if you're roaming in the US, UK and Australia through the company's Sprint, O2 and Optus partners, respectively. However, the company has promised it'll expand to "key Asian, European Union markets, and other large global travel hubs" in the next 12 months, bringing 1GB of data for $25, 3GB for $39 and 5GB for $49 per month. Contracts will run month-to-month, and you'll be able to cancel anytime with 48 hours notice, according to Voiamo. Sounds like just the thing for globetrotting bloggers, especially with a certain electronics spectacle coming up in the New Year. Check the PR after the break for more info.

Health and Fitness Talk ? Strep Throat

Strep throat is one of those conditions that is more prevelant during?the winter but can occur at any time.? Not all sore throats ore strep?throat, most are viral infections.? Though you can contract strep?throat at any age it is most common in children and teens between 5-15?years of age.? Strep throat affects both boys and girls equally.?There are over 600 million cases of strep throat diagnosed worldwide?with at least 11 million people in the US being diagnosed with strep?throat every year.? Where 37% of children between the ages of 5-15?with a?sore throat?have strep throat it usually affects only about?15% of adults with a sore throat.

Strep throat is caused by group A streptococcus bacteria and is highly?contagious.? The most common method of transmission is through air?borne droplets.? Which means if you are living in or working in close?proximity to someone that is infected with strep chances are you?re?going to get it too.? Day care centers and schools are the most common?places where the strep bacteria spread.

Symptoms of strep throat usually manifest between 1-4 days after?becoming infected.? The symptoms of strep throat mimic those of other?sore throat conditions, however, they tend to be more severe.? You or?your child will develop a fever above101F that may develop suddenly or?develop slowly, chills may or may not accompany the fever.? Most?people especially children complain of a sore throat that may be?severe enough to interfere with swallowing.? If you look at your?child?s throat you will usually see red and white patches in the throat?and the tonsils are usually enlarged and red.? You may notice that you?or your child have swollen and/or tender lymph glands in the neck.?Most people also experience a general feeling of malaise and fatigue?with a poor appetite, headache and stomach ache.? Young children may?also experience nausea and vomiting.

Strep throat is diagnosed by the Dr taking a throat culture.? The Dr?or lab technician will take a cotton swab and wipe the back of your?child?s throat and culture it in the lab which takes approximately 48?hours.? In some cases your Dr may request a rapid antigen test on the?swab sample which can determine if there is strep bacteria present in?minutes.? However, these tests can miss some strep infections so if it?comes out negative frequently the Dr will also have a culture done to?verify the results.

The treatment of choice for strep throat is antibiotic therapy.? In?most casess the Dr will prescribe oral amoxicillin, however, in young?children that are having a very difficult time swallowing the Dr may?give an in jection of penicillin.? For people that are allergic to?penicillin the Dr will prescribe a different antibiotic like keflex or?erythromycin.? The Dr will determine the length of time you or your?child need to take antibiotics.? The most common problem with?antibiotic therapy is that once you feel better many people either?forget to take them or just stop taking them.? It?s important to?always complete any course of antibiotics your Dr prescribes or the?infection can return and increase the potential for serious?complications.

The best way to prevent strep throat isto practice good hand washing?and to teach children todo the same.? Either use warm soap and water?when available or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.? Always cover your?mouth using the crook of your elbow and teach children to do the same.?Should you or your child have strep throat do not share drinking?glasses or utensils with anyone and always wash them with hot soapy?water.

Discovery's Revision3 extends partnership with Fishbowl Media, invests development money

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Revision3, the Discovery-owned online video network, has forged a new partnership with Fishbowl Worldwide Media to distribute and sell advertising for its pets-focused YouTube programming, as well as to fund development of new shows.

The new deal also constitutes a first-look deal, giving Revision3 (and its parent company, which owns TV network Animal Planet) first dibs on all co-developed shows.

Fishbowl Worldwide Media, a studio run by "America's Funniest Home Videos" creator Vin Di Bona and industry veteran Bruce Gersh, already held a deal with Revision3 for its "Cute Win Fail" show, which boasts more than 250,000 subscribers. Now Revision3 will distribute and sell ads for Petsami, Fishbowl's pets-focused channel, which has about 30,000 subscribers.

"We launched Petsami in January as a self-funded pets and animal channel and we spent the year growing an audience around clips - short and fun and funny and snackable," David Beebe, Vice President and General Manager of Fishbowl's digital studio, Told TheWrap. "We started talking to Revision3 about how to expand the audience. With Revision3, there's a lot of opportunity in merchandise and a lot of ideas about how to take the brand beyond and turn it into a franchise."

While Petsami has a small subscriber count, its weekly views are quite high, according to Ryan Vance, Revision3's SVP of programming. It has amassed more than 27 million views since its launch, reflecting that while the channel hasn't convinced viewers to subscribe, many videos have gone viral.

Petsami is bolstered by Fishbowl's massive library of user-generated content, which stems from two decades of submissions to Di Bona's "America's Funniest Home Videos."

YouTube has been investing more in premium content, funding channels that are offering alternatives to the user-generated content that first made the platform famous.

Fishbowl launched this channel without any of YouTube's financial support, but Beebe argued that there is still plenty of space for UGC on the portal.

Fishbowl, armed with development money from Revision3 and a first-look deal, will work with its partner to diversify its line of shows.

"They haven't hit with weekly regular shows with talent that the audience connects with enough to subscribe and watch on a regular basis," Vance told TheWrap. "They have a unique library of all those years of clips from Vin Di Bona Productions' history. Part of what we'll do is help them figure out what are weekly and regular types shows that will get more of a subscriber base growing."

If the show pleases Revision3 enough, it could also find its way on television. Discovery acquired Revision3 in May to help bring the company's digital experts under its TV-focused corporate umbrella. Revision3 can help cross-promote on YouTube and on Discovery, giving more scale to the channel.

"We've had a lot of conversations with Revision3 about how we work with Discovery and Animal Planet to take some of that content and potentially move it to the Animal Planet world," Beebe said.

Personhood USA: GOP needs to drop John McCain, not abortion issue

In a Fox News interview on Sunday, John McCain urged Republicans to drop the abortion issue, claiming that party members need to leave abortion alone. These statements made me wonder: instead of dropping the abortion issue, why not drop John McCain? For that matter, why not drop all of the Republican candidates who want to maintain the status quo on abortion, which includes upholding among the most outrageously liberal abortion laws in the world?

McCain is just the tip of the iceberg -- as so-called "moderate" Republicans are urging a push toward the political left, young female voters like me who declined to vote for Mitt Romney are left scratching our heads.

The glaring problem in the past election was not that Romney was too pro-life. If the GOP can't elect one of the most pro-abortion Republican candidates ever to grace the candidacy, choosing an even more pro-abortion candidate is certainly not going to help. The problem is that Romney is not a social conservative.

Let's review the Republican primaries. In early 2012, Personhood USA hosted one of two presidential candidate forums, giving candidates a platform to share their positions on the abortion issue. Every candidate signed the pro-life Personhood pledge and participated, except for Mitt Romney. Shortly after, despite major financial deficits, other candidates who had signed the personhood pledge and continued to be outspoken on their pro-life positions were real contenders in the primary race.

Given the financial support that Romney enjoyed, I believe that those more conservative candidates could have won the race.

Candidates who are truly conservative and hold to their principles are electable. Candidates pandering to liberal voters expend so much energy on downplaying their conservative values (if they even exist) that they lose touch with their base and lose the race. Case in point, Mitt Romney...

Malaria study suggests drugs should target female parasites

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Fresh insight into the parasite that causes malaria suggests a new way to develop drugs and vaccines to tackle the disease.

Research into malaria parasites -- which exist in male and female forms, and mate to spread the disease -- suggests that treatments would be more likely to succeed if designed to target female forms of the parasite.

Scientists found that male parasites can adapt to new surroundings faster than the females. When malaria infects the bloodstream after a mosquito bite, the male parasites are better able to react quickly to repeated attacks by the immune system and so are likely to be harder to treat with drugs and vaccines.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh, who took part in the study, examined the genetic fingerprint of various species of malaria parasites at different stages in their life cycles. They found that genes associated with male parasites tended to evolve faster over time than those of females.

Targeting the females would be more likely to succeed in killing the infection in the long term and would prevent the parasites from breeding and spreading.

The research, carried out in collaboration with the University of Glasgow, Leiden University Medical Centre, Netherlands, and the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics in Warsaw of the Polish Academy of Sciences, was published in the journal Evolution, Medicine and Public Health. It was supported by the Wellcome Trust, the European Union, the Polish Ministry of Science and the Foundation for Polish Science.

Dr Sarah Reece of the University of Edinburgh's School of Biological Sciences, who co-led the study, said: "Malaria is notorious for evolving to evade treatment -- it is crucial that drugs and vaccines are designed to target the slower, female, form of the parasite."

(AP) ? Amanda Knox's upcoming memoir has a title, a cover design and a new publication date.

HarperCollins announced Wednesday the book is titled "Waiting to be Heard." It will come out April 30, two months later than originally scheduled. The date was changed out of deference to a court in Italy that scheduled a March 25 hearing for the prosecution's appeal of the former exchange student's acquittal in the 2007 murder of her British roommate.

The 25-year-old Knox returned to her native Seattle last year after spending four years in a jail in Perugia, Italy. Her ordeal made international headlines. Her book deal was announced in February and reportedly was worth $4 million.

The cover features a close-up of an intense, unsmiling Knox. The picture was taken earlier this year.

Moody's eyeing progress of sin tax bill in PHL Congress | Economy ...

Global debt watcher Moody?s Investors Service is keeping an eye on the sin tax measure now pending in the Philippine Congress where it is up for discussions at the bicameral conference committee level.
?
Moving forward, what Moody?s wants to see ? in particular ? is how the legislated sin tax measure would impact on and sustain the government?s fiscal needs, said Christian de Guzman, Moody?s lead analyst for the Philippines, in response to an e-mailed query by reporters in Manila. ?
?
The measure seeks to increase taxes on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages over five years.
?
?We would see the actual passage of the bill as positive as it would help to increase the government?s revenues,? Singapore-based De Guzman noted.
?
?Relative to other countries with similar ratings, the Philippine government?s revenues are far lower and thus have an adverse impact on key ratios of fiscal sustainability that we monitor,? he added.
?
Last month, Moody?s upgraded its ratings on Philippine foreign and local currency long-term bonds to a notch below investment grade (Ba1 from Ba2), which confirmed the earlier ratings given by Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor?s.
?
?I think it?s also important to note that the dimensions of the sin tax bill post-bicameral conference are as yet unclear,? said De Guzman.
?
Because the additional revenues will fund healthcare spending, the actual passage of the bill would have neutral impact on the deficit, according to Moody?s.
?
Still, the measure?s actual passage into law bodes well for the government?s efforts to improve revenues, according to the analyst.
?
Such development reflects a concrete example of the 15th Congress actually enacting a new legislation in aid of government?s finances, De Guzman added.
?
?The 15th Congress had not achieved any significant developments with regards to revenue previously, while the 14th Congress was characterized by the passage of several revenue eroding measures,? he noted.

The bicameral conference committee will reconcile both versions of the Sin Tax Reform Bill approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Houser version seeks additional revenues of P31.5 billion in the first year of implementation and the Senate version is eyeing to raise P40 billion more in the same period. ? VS, GMA News

A case of Obamacare and religious liberty

On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered a lower court to decide on a case involving a clash between religious liberty and Obamacare. Government must tread lightly in defining religion as a way to achieve universal health care and increase access to contraceptives.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered a lower court to take up a complaint by Liberty University of Virginia that contends Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, overreaches in mandating religious-based employers must have a role in providing contraceptive services in employee health insurance.

On Monday, the Supreme Court signaled it might again reconsider the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). It ordered a lower court to weigh the law?s mandate on employers to support health insurance ? including coverage of contraceptive services ? for workers.

Last June, the high court upheld the law?s ?tax? on individuals who refuse to buy health insurance. Now it wants a court to consider a complaint from Liberty University of Virginia that the mandate on employers violates religious freedom by requiring employers to have a role in funding health services such as abortion-inducing drugs.

This case is only one of more than 40 similar challenges to the law making their way through the federal courts. Any one of them could result in a Supreme Court ruling next year, potentially upsetting the law?s goal of providing universal health care.

While the abortion issue drives most of the suits, the heart of the legal arguments concerns the Obama administration?s attempt to define religion and to do it so narrowly as to give that definition authority over almost all employees.

The administration defines a ?religious employer? as an institution focused solely on worship; that aims to inculcate values as its main purpose; that hires primarily persons of the same faith; and that serves primarily persons of the same faith. Opponents of this straitjacket definition rightly counter that even Jesus and his healing activities would not be seen as religious.

In its 5-to-4 ruling last June upholding much of the law, the court warned that the act must still meet other requirements in the Constitution. Four liberal justices even cited the need for the law not to interfere with ?the free exercise of religion.?

And indeed, on Nov. 16 a federal judge sided with a Christian publisher, Tyndale House, granting it a temporary injunction against the Department of Health and Human Services in its enforcement of the mandate to cover abortifacients in the company?s health plan.

The Obama administration argued that the Christian business is not ?religious enough? to be given an exemption. The judge, however, found that ?the beliefs of Tyndale and its owners are indistinguishable.... Christian principles, prayer, and activities are pervasive at Tyndale, and the company?s ownership structure is designed to ensure that it never strays from its faith-oriented mission.?

The court?s action follows a similar court injunction in July that temporarily protected a Colorado-based business, Hercules Industries, whose Roman Catholic owners don?t want to implement the mandate for their employees if it includes support of abortion services. Another court, however, ruled Nov. 19 that the Hobby Lobby company, run by evangelical Christians along Christian values, is not entitled to protection in its desire to avoid coverage of abortifacient contraceptives for its 15,000 workers.

Clearly the Supreme Court will need to sort out these competing rulings. Defining the line between religious institutions and religious-based employers is not a task left to the executive branch. Nor is defining religion itself.

Many churches fulfill their religious mission by hiring outside the faith and in ministering to others. Their work is not limited to worship confined only to the faithful. Many religious institutions, from schools to homeless shelters, find their purpose in working with members outside their community.

Under current law, for the government to control religious believers would require it to have a compelling state interest and that there are no alternatives to its goals. But that is not the case with health insurance or contraceptive services. The administration admits as much in providing exemptions to churches that fit its definition of ?religious employer.?

The Supreme Court has long prevented government officials from trying to make religious determinations. ?If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation,? wrote Justice Robert Jackson in a 1943 decision, ?it is that no official ... can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.?

The dictates of government need not conflict with the demands of faiths. Either the courts or Congress needs to make that a reality before the health-care law takes full effect in 2014.

Chinese bus drivers stage work stoppage

CHINESE BUS DRIVERS STAGE WORK STOPPAGE IN S?PORE

(AFP, 26 Nov) ? More than 100 mainland Chinese bus drivers in Singapore refused to work on Monday in a rare case of labour mass action in the city-state.

The drivers, disgruntled over their pay from state-linked transport firm SMRT, refused to board a shuttle that was going to ferry them from their dormitory to a nearby depot.

After talks with SMRT management with police on standby, the protesting drivers said they would report for work on Tuesday.

SMRT is 54 percent owned by state investment firm Temasek Holdings. Singapore has been hiring bus drivers from China and Malaysia because of a chronic shortage of manpower.

One of the Chinese drivers, who declined to be named, told reporters the dispute arose because they felt aggrieved over a disparity in pay between Chinese and Malaysian bus drivers.

Drivers from China earn a basic salary of Sg$1,075 ($879), while those from Malaysia earn $1,375, the driver said. The dispute was also about the lack of bonuses for Chinese bus drivers, he added.

Strikes and other forms of industrial action are rare in Singapore, where the labour movement works closely with the government and private business, making the city-state an attractive place for foreign investment.

The Ministry of Manpower issued a stern warning to the 102 drivers who took part in the stoppage, saying it ?takes the workers? actions very seriously? and was closely monitoring the situation.

In a statement, the National Transport Workers? Union urged the Chinese drivers ? who are not union members ? to return to work immediately.

No major disruptions were reported during the work stoppage, which took place during Singapore?s year-end school holidays, when demand for public transport is lower.

Who says there is ?strike?in Singapore? For so many years, there is no strike in Singapore at all. It?s unheard of. With our unique ?tripartite? where our unions, management and government working hand in hand in a holy trinity for the betterment of the workers, why should there be a strike?

But when it did happen, as in the recent China bus drivers case at Woodlands and not too long ago when some Bangladeshi workers at Tampines went on strike, it became big news. Even foreign press reports on the latest incident. Our local press soften it by using euphemism in its news reports describing it as an ?industrial incident!? Why cant they just call a spade a spade? Too ashamed to use the word ?strike??

Under The Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act of Singapore, strike is illegal, in other words against the law in certain industries. There are broadly 28 categories of industries where the workers cannot stage a strike or ?industrial action?. Transport workers in the essential transport industry is one of them.

Illegal strikes and lock-outs in essential services

Part III of the CLPTA deals with illegal strikes and lock-outs in essential services. Section 5 of the Act defines a strike as ?the cessation of work by a body of persons employed in any essential service acting in combination, or a concerted refusal or a refusal under a common understanding of a number of persons who are or who have been so employed to continue to work or to accept employment?, and a lock-out as ?the closing of a place of employment or the suspension of work, or the refusal by an employer to continue to employ any number of persons employed by him in consequence of a trade dispute, done with a view to compelling those persons, or to aid another employer in compelling persons employed by him, to accept terms or conditions of or affecting employment?. Essential services are any services, businesses, trades, undertakings, manufactures or callings included in Part I of the First Schedule to the Act?

But to be fair to the NTWU ? National Transport Workers Union, those China workers are not unionised. They are not members of the NTWU. In other words, the plight of the China workers culminating in the strike has got nothing to do with the union. It is between those PRC workers and the Management.

Obviously, those China workers must be very pissed off. They are now regretting coming over here to work when the terms and conditions presented to them were so tempting back home then. They felt cheated, unfairly treated and exploited for the same job. They acknowledged that they did not mind locals getting paid more. What they were dissatisfied about is the perceived unfairness and discrimination between them and Malaysian bus drivers. That is the crux of the matter.

Since they felt so bitter, they were prepared to stage a one day strike. Worst scenario, they just returned back to China. Do you think our authorities would use the law to arrest them? Do you think those PRCs will be locked up for staging an illegal strike in an essential industry? The law is clear. They have obviously committed an offence and they should be arrested. But we know very well that no arrest will be made, just like the other case where some Bangladeshi workers refused to go to work in a construction site at Tampines.

If the same were to happen to local workers, they may not be so lucky. We locals dare not go on strike especially if we work in an essential services industry. We have our HDB loan payments to consider, our children need money to go school, our parents need us to support them and so on. We can?t afford to be arrested and locked up for staging an illegal strike. Unlike those China nationals working here, we got no where to go. Where can we go? Whereas, those China nationals could always go back to their own country if they are not happy. In other words, they could cause havoc and just leave. It reminds us of Amy Cheong ? FT Australian citizen who went back to Australia after she was sacked by NTUC for making racist remarks on her FB not too long ago. Now you see the difference between us and those foreign workers?

Since we are at the mercy of those powerful figures in the tripartite holy trinity, we can never go on strike at the risk of personal ruins and destruction. So even if we work 18 hours a day (essential services are exempted from over-clocking of OT and working hours), 7 days a week under poor working conditions with little welfare and no pay rise for more than 10 years, we still cannot protest. We are not like those PRCs or foreigners working here where they don?t have the kind of family obligations and commitments here.

Those PRC workers did not commit any crime or damage any public property. They were just pissed off with the perceived unfair treatment and injustice, so they refused to go to work. Straightaway, lots of police officers and police riot vehicles surrounded the dormitory and created such a scene as though they were terrorists or serious criminals? Is it not an act of intimidation to cow them into submission? You better stop your nonsense and get back to work soon or else ? What an embarrassment. If it?s in other countries, no one would even bother to report this piece of news ? one day strike by dissatisfied bus drivers. But here, it is different. We are a first world country with third world economy. We are the richest country in the whole world yet we treat our workers no better than those third world countries. We are uniquely Singapore.

Italy's Berlusconi says considering political return

ROME (Reuters) - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Monday that he was considering the political situation closely and would decide on what course of action to take once the results of a primary by his centre-left adversaries was clear.

In the latest of several switches of position, Berlusconi said at the weekend he was considering whether or not to stand in the national election expected in March, having previously said he would not run.

In an interview with his own Canale 5 television station on Monday, Berlusconi gave no details but said he would decide what to do once it was clear who would be the main centre-left candidate in the 2013 election.

"It think that it's right for someone who had the honor of leading the Italian government for almost 10 years to reflect on the way to achieve this modernization of Italy, this liberal revolution," he said.

The center-left run-off to pick the candidate to fight to succeed Mario Monti as prime minister will take place next weekend.

Il Giornale, a newspaper owned by his family, reported that he was considering setting up a new party and would make an announcement this week.

How TV is Jumping on the Online Video Bandwagon | Business 2 ...

the online video bandwagonI have always loved the concept of a viral video. I associate viral video with the shift in media that has meant that we can all be producers of content that can be seen by a mass audience. What an amazing opportunity. For me, it represents a shift in power and a democratic potential for more people to share their creativity with the world.

As online video has become more established as a main content type on the web, the general public aren?t the only ones realising it?s potential. Online video is being used to serve marketing needs for a lot of businesses ? generally the more savvy ones. This makes sense. It is a new way to reach customers and it allows video platform websites to generate revenue.

Another industry that is catching on is the TV industry. My difficulty with TV sponsored online video is that it interferes with my idea of what a viral video is and should be. It may be that my definition of a viral video needs to change. I think there needs to be a distinction between user-generated content and content that has been generated for corporate interests.

In the fight for video virality, is the playing field level? It seems not when corporate sponsored video (e.g. for a TV company) not only has the finance and personnel to invest in pushing their videos, they will also have existing social networks to share their video content with ? a head start to be envious of, surely.

An interesting case study is the Syfy series, ?Viral Video Showdown? which is a series of online video contests. See their trailer here:

This is an example of a TV production company attempting to cash in on the current popularity of online video. However, their ideas about what makes a video go viral are far from accurate and lack an understanding of the complexities around viral video.

There are a lot of theories about what makes a video go viral, and it isn?t difficult to identify common qualities in videos that have gone viral. However, a lot of those qualities also exist in millions of videos that haven?t gone viral. Ultimately, it is very difficult to predict what will go viral.

Kevin Allocca, YouTube Trends Manager, claims there are three main factors that make a video go viral.

1. Tastemakers ? those who introduce things to a larger audience

Usually, people with a connection to a large, existing audience help videos go viral. This is often through the use of social networks on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. This is usually unintentional. A so-called tastemaker will come across a video they like and they will share it which has an unexpected impact for the view count.

2. Participation ? people sharing videos & making their own versions

Content that is relevant to a large number of people (e.g. particular groups) will encourage participation. Participation can come in the form of sharing. It can also mean that viewers participate by making their own versions of the video. Participation is at the core of virality.

3. Unique and unexpected

The majority of viral videos are unique and unexpected. People will share things that take them by surprise ? they will want to share that sensation with their own networks.

It seems that online video which is sponsored by a TV production company can fit with Alloca?s criteria ? even if the production company is their own tastemaker. Although, I would argue that tastemaker sharing is an unintentional phenomena ? a stroke of luck for the average video content creator. In terms of the other criteria Alloca mentions, TV sponsored online video can be shared like other videos, but they will always have an unfair advantage. Obviously, a marketer or a TV production company can feasibly produce video that is unique and unexpected.

Here are the two videos from episode 1 of the viral video showdown:

At the time of writing, the first (Winky Face ;) ? Official Movie Trailer) has just under 10,000 views on YouTube and the second (Going Postal Trailer) has just under 30,000 views. The judges of the show voted the one with the least views so far as the winner. I would like to know what criteria the judges used. If they have a formula to predict which videos will/should go viral, they should consider selling it to marketers!

It is difficult to answer the question, ?can TV produce viral videos??, based on the Syfy programme. This is because the answer depends on a) the question of when a view count should be considered ?viral? and b) the passage of time. A video is only viral, once it has gone viral. In fact, this could happen some months or even years after it has been live on the Internet.

There was something exciting about the viral video phenomena when YouTube was in it?s infancy. As a viewer, I didn?t feel manipulated ? it felt organic and videos seemed like an authentic reflection of what lay content creators were generating from their everyday lives ? content for the sake of itself rather than for the purpose of reaching mass audiences. Will Joe Bloggs be able to compete with the big companies in the future? it remains to be seen. YouTube has a big responsibility for keeping the platform as democratic as possible. Otherwise it risks becoming just another TV channel.

Funneling the sun's energy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The quest to harness a broader spectrum of sunlight's energy to produce electricity has taken a radically new turn, with the proposal of a "solar energy funnel" that takes advantage of materials under elastic strain.

"We're trying to use elastic strains to produce unprecedented properties," says Ju Li, an MIT professor and corresponding author of a paper describing the new solar-funnel concept that was published this week in the journal Nature Photonics.

In this case, the "funnel" is a metaphor: Electrons and their counterparts, holes -- which are split off from atoms by the energy of photons -- are driven to the center of the structure by electronic forces, not by gravity as in a household funnel. And yet, as it happens, the material actually does assume the shape of a funnel: It is a stretched sheet of vanishingly thin material, poked down at its center by a microscopic needle that indents the surface and produces a curved, funnel-like shape.

The pressure exerted by the needle imparts elastic strain, which increases toward the sheet's center. The varying strain changes the atomic structure just enough to "tune" different sections to different wavelengths of light -- including not just visible light, but also some of the invisible spectrum, which accounts for much of sunlight's energy.

Li, who holds joint appointments as the Battelle Energy Alliance Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and as a professor of materials science and engineering, sees the manipulation of strain in materials as opening a whole new field of research.

Strain -- defined as the pushing or pulling of a material into a different shape -- can be either elastic or inelastic. Xiaofeng Qian, a postdoc in MIT's Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering who was a co-author of the paper, explains that elastic strain corresponds to stretched atomic bonds, while inelastic, or plastic, strain corresponds to broken or switched atomic bonds. A spring that is stretched and released is an example of elastic strain, whereas a piece of crumpled tinfoil is a case of plastic strain.

The new solar-funnel work uses precisely controlled elastic strain to govern electrons' potential in the material. The MIT team used computer modeling to determine the effects of the strain on a thin layer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a material that can form a film just a single molecule (about six angstroms) thick.

It turns out that the elastic strain, and therefore the change that is induced in electrons' potential energy, changes with their distance from the funnel's center -- much like the electron in a hydrogen atom, except this "artificial atom" is much larger in size and is two-dimensional. In the future, the researchers hope to carry out laboratory experiments to confirm the effect.

Unlike graphene, another prominent thin-film material, MoS2 is a natural semiconductor: It has a crucial characteristic, known as a bandgap, that allows it to be made into solar cells or integrated circuits. But unlike silicon, now used in most solar cells, placing the film under strain in the "solar energy funnel" configuration causes its bandgap to vary across the surface, so that different parts of it respond to different colors of light.

In an organic solar cell, the electron-hole pair, called an exciton, moves randomly through the material after being generated by photons, limiting the capacity for energy production. "It's a diffusion process," Qian says, "and it's very inefficient."

But in the solar funnel, he adds, the electronic characteristics of the material "leads them to the collection site [at the film's center], which should be more efficient for charge collection."

The convergence of four trends, Li says, "has opened up this elastic strain engineering field recently": the development of nanostructured materials, such as carbon nanotubes and MoS2, that are capable of retaining large amounts of elastic strain indefinitely; the development of the atomic force microscope and next-generation nanomechanical instruments, which impose force in a controlled manner; electron microscopy and synchrotron facilities, needed to directly measure the elastic strain field; and electronic-structure calculation methods for predicting the effects of elastic strain on a material's physical and chemical properties.

"People knew for a long time that by applying high pressure, you can induce huge changes in material properties," Li says. But more recent work has shown that controlling strain in different directions, such as shear and tension, can yield an enormous variety of properties.

One of the first commercial applications of elastic-strain engineering was the achievement, by IBM and Intel, of a 50 percent improvement in velocity of electrons simply by imparting a 1 percent elastic strain on nanoscale silicon channels in transistors.

The work was done with Ji Feng of Peking University and Cheng-Wei Huang, and was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Thick Texas fog played into the massive 140-car Thanksgiving pileup in Texas that killed 2 people and injured 80, but a lingering question is whether a lower Texas speed limit could curb highway bravado by motorists and professional drivers alike.

While authorities have pegged thick Texas fog as the main culprit in the 140-car Thanksgiving pileup on I-10 just southwest of Beaumont, big rig truckers posting on Internet message boards suggest that civilian and professional drivers maintaining potentially reckless speeds, despite the conditions, may have been another major contributing factor.

Crowded with motorists and tractor trailers, the I-10 phalanx was moving at near 70 miles per hour despite the pea soup fog that rolled in, authorities said. Texas and Utah are the only states that allow truckers to travel at 80 miles an hour, while most states only allow 65-mile-an-hour truck travel. California's truck speed limit is the lowest, at 55. Compounding speed with low visibility, the margin of error shrank to dangerous levels, truckers wrote.

?It?s a wonder there wasn?t one like that between Detroit and Grand Rapids on 96 in the wee hours on Tuesday into Wednesday as many super truckers were flying by me in the pea soup non vis [non visibility] fog up there,? a rookie truck driver wrote on The Truckers Report website. ?[Heck] of a choice though ? run with them (or fast as I could anyway lol) and risk a wreck or slow to a safe speed and worry about getting rammed from behind.?

The I-10 Texas pile up was ?even worse than last week on I-35, 4 rigs, 9 cars, 1 DOA,? another trucker wrote on the board. ?I saw that one as the lifeflight was coming in. There have been several in a 10 mile part of I-35 under construction, all with fatalities. Guys PLEASE be careful.?

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recently reported that 25 percent of speeding-related large-truck fatalities occurred during adverse weather conditions, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

To be sure, investigators are still looking into how the Beaumont pileup started and developed, though, as in the bulk of mega pileups, weather conditions were chiefly to blame, as a single mistake quickly multiplied with the limited visibility.

While statistics show that more than two-thirds of truck-passenger car crashes are the fault of the motorist, not the trucker, Texas authorities have confirmed that it was a tractor trailer that crashed into the SUV of a Pearland,? Tex., couple that were killed in the massive Thanksgiving pileup. Truckers commenting on the crash also noted the prominence of several other tractor trailers in news pictures. The scene was chaos, with first responders overwhelmed and those unhurt from the crash scrambling to help survivors, many of them bleeding and at least 10 critically injured.

Drivers weighing in on the accident on various comment boards lamented the possible cultural dynamics of the crash. ?Unless you?ve ever traveled here [in Texas], it?s hard for anyone to imagine how fast drivers in this state actually go,? one commenter wrote.

?Probably a better solution is to put a lower speed limit on those crazy big rigs,? a commenter on a CBS News story wrote on Friday. ?The speed limit on 20 S of Midland is 80. I often travel this road and the big rigs just go flying past me. Those big heavy loads are hard to stop/slow down in an emergency. [The speed limit for trucks should be] 60 mph in Texas.?

But creating differential speed limits has its own problems. Studies have found that crashes increase when trucks drive slower than motorist traffic, and the Transportation Research Board has concluded that ?a strong case cannot be made on empirical grounds in support of or in opposition to differential speed limits? for trucks and cars.

For now, Texas is leaning toward stepping on the gas, not the brake. The state legislature approved 85 mile per hour speed limits last year, and the first such stretch in the nation ? a 41-mile Austin-San Antonio toll road ? opened in September. (Congress ceded the speed argument to the states in1995, when it eliminated all federal restrictions on maximum speed limits.)
