Love Knows No Gender Difference

TUESDAY, July 31 (HealthDay News) -- Think married men and women show their love in vastly different ways? Not necessarily.

Although popular culture reinforces the stereotype that there's a gender gap when it comes to expressing affection, few studies have actually tested the notion.

A small new study suggests, however, that men are just as likely as women to be openly affectionate. The study, which also identified some differences between the sexes, was published recently in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

"Men and women are actually more similar in the ways they express love than they are different," said study author Elizabeth Schoenfeld, a researcher at the University of Texas in Austin. "But we also learned that, even in the wake of feminism, wives express love by being less assertive and more accommodating, while husbands show love by initiating sex or sharing activities together."

The study involved 168 couples in first marriages living in rural central Pennsylvania. Data was collected in initial interviews, followed by telephone interviews in which husbands and wives separately reported activities and interactions. The interviews occurred within two months of when each couple was married and then annually, with a final set of interviews conducted after 13 years of marriage.

At the conclusion of the study, 105 of the original couples were still married, three were widowed and 56 were divorced. Almost all of the participants were white, and more than half had a high school education.

Contrary to some common gender stereotypes, the research showed that the more men loved their wives, the more likely they were to be affectionate. They were also more likely to involve their spouses in their leisure activities and in household chores. Love did not, however, mean a husband did more chores around the house or was more eager to relieve his wife of the chores for which she was responsible.

The researchers found, in general, that a husband's love may create an environment in which the couple does a variety of things together. The more husbands loved their wives, the more likely they were to initiate sex. For wives, though, increased love for their husbands meant they were actually less likely to make the first move.

Why would that be? "If a wife is feeling unloved, it could be that she is attempting to kick-start the marriage," Schoenfeld said.

Wives' love was less associated with interest in joint activities, and relied more on expressions of love. More love also was associated with greater accommodation to husbands' moods and needs.

"Biting their tongues, letting men initiate sex more often, showing a willingness to allow men to assert themselves a little more -- this is what we saw when women were more in love," Schoenfeld explained.

Some experts believe differences between men and women in marriage are typically overemphasized.

"There aren't too many real gender and sex differences between men and women on the whole," said Stevie Yap, a researcher in the department of psychology at Michigan State University in East Lansing. "If you look at the overall research, gender differences don't usually hold up."

Yap, who recently published research on happiness and marriage in the Journal of Research and Personality, found that although matrimony doesn't tend to make people happier than they were when they were single, it appears to protect against declines in happiness that can occur in adulthood.

Yap said only a few gender differences actually have been shown by research to be real: men tend to be physically stronger and more sexually active, and have a greater tendency toward aggression. He said that even these three characteristics, however, can be affected by socialization and experience.

Schoenfeld, too, thinks differences between the sexes have been exaggerated.

"Don't be fooled by popular stereotypes," she said. "Men are not from Mars and women are not from Venus. We are all on planet Earth."

Why I Hate Fifty Shades Of Grey (It's Not For The Reasons You Think)

I want to talk about Fifty Shades of Grey. Not about the writing?plenty has already been said of that already. I admit that I hold bad writing in contempt, and E.L. James is a bad writer. The plot, characters, and dialogue could very well have been ripped from a low-budget porno. Or from Twilight (which, funnily enough, seems to be the case?the novel purportedly originated as a fanfiction based on Stephanie Meyers? series).

But bad writing is not why I find Fifty Shades of Grey to be repulsive. I hate?hate?this book because it conflates BDSM with abuse. Because it features an emotionally abusive man preying upon an insecure young woman and calls it a relationship. Christian Grey is an abuser. He is emotionally unavailable, emotionally abusive, and sexually exploitative. His complete disregard for his partner?s comfort, experience, and emotional well being are contemptible: he gets his pleasure at the expense of his partner.

But somehow, emotional unavailability translates into an ineffable sexiness; lack of care turns Christian Grey into some sort of sexual demigod. He throws a sexually inexperienced woman headfirst into the depths of what takes a great deal of trust and intimacy to safely establish, and gives her neither. This is not the basis of BDSM. While power certainly comes into play, as it does in all relationships, BDSM is not about using and abusing power over someone in order to get off. It is not about abusing someone?s trust or someone?s body.

Facebook will force Timeline on you by the fall

4 hrs.

You can pout, you can cry, and you can scream?? but your Facebook profile will be converted to a Timeline by the fall anyway.

We've known that the change is inevitable from the very start and most of us are already using Timeline, Facebook's latest profile design, either by choice or because the social network switched us already. But there are a couple of hold-outs among Facebook's 955 million members, folks desperately clinging on to their beloved old profile layouts.?

Well, as?TechCrunch's Josh Constine points out, there'll be no more of that! Folks who are still using the old profile design should expect prompts telling them that it's time to switch to Timeline. After the appearance of that prompt, they will get seven days to sort things out ??before their profiles switch to Timeline automatically.

We asked Facebook to confirm the timeframe Constine first reported?? on the off-chance that there is more time ? but a spokesperson simply told us that?"the hope is to have everyone moved over to Timeline by fall."

Ah, well. Time to send our handy-dandy "How to live with the Facebook Timeline (because you have no choice)" guide to all your friends.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Mississippi church bans African American wedding

This one truly falls into the WTF category.

The rather nice looking couple (Charles and Te?Andrea Wilson?pictured here) wished to get married, so they put all the arrangement in place to do so at?the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in?Mississippi. Well unfortunately things did not pan out. As reported in the Guardian ?

The sanctuary of the church had been arranged, the rehearsal was set for Friday, invitations had been sent out to friends extending a ?special thank you to the First Baptist Church and members?.

Then, at about 5.10pm on Thursday evening Te?Andrea received a call. Some of the congregation of the church, which is largely white, had seen a group of black women setting up the sanctuary for the wedding and complained to the pastor.

?If the pastor married her, because they were black then they would vote him out,? Te?Andrea was told. The wedding was off.

So in essence, this pastor was blackmailed ? either boot them out because they were not white, or lose his job. He opted to carry on being employed by bigots.

As you might imagine, Mr Wilson confronted this pastor ?

?When I got the news I couldn?t believe it at first,? Charles Wilson told the Jackson Clarion-Leader. ?This is not a matter of colour for me, it?s about God, and what better place to get married than God?s sanctuary. God?s love is colour blind.?

Wilson confronted the pastor, Stan Weatherford, and asked him what had happened. According to Wilson, he replied that he had ?received all sorts of phone calls, text messages, and it was just not going to happen?.

Apparently when questioned by a news channel, this Pastor is quoted as saying, ?I didn?t want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn?t want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te?Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day.?

Well, he might not have wanted a?controversy, but his decision has generated one. Apparently only five or six members complained.

The local press reports this here where you will also find a video interview with the couple.

Local Church Helps Recycle Old Electronics

TOWN OF TONAWANDA, NY - Have you ever wondered what to do with your old computers, cell phones, or any other old electronic? Well, an e-recycling event was held Sunday in the Town of Tonawanda to help out.

Ruth Snyder, co-pastor of the Church of Nativity, said the congregation decided to take part in this event when they noticed their own electronics piling up.?

"We're getting to know our neighbors and they're getting to know us. Everyone seems to be really appreciative for the opportunity to responsibly recycle," said Snyder.

The Church of Nativity hosted the electronic recycling event along with Sunnking Electronics Recycling who is in charge of disposing of the materials properly.

Zimmerman returns?to roots?as Nats beat Brewers

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 10:11 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann's family and friends made the short trip from his hometown of Auburndale, Wis., and did what most fans do before games at Miller Park.

"They were out in the parking lot tailgating since 3 o'clock today, so I'm sure they're all feeling pretty good right now," Zimmermann said.

That's because the Nationals right-hander pitched his first game against Milwaukee, riding three Washington home runs to a 4-1 victory over the Brewers on Saturday night.

"It was definitely awesome," said Zimmermann, who once pitched a Legion all-star game at Miller Park. "A dream come true to pitch in front of my family and friends, and everyone who came out to watch. I'm just glad I gave them a good showing. . I didn't want to go out there and have a terrible outing. I thought I threw the ball well and got some quick outs. They've got a pretty good lineup and I was able to do pretty well."

Zimmermann (8-6) struck out six and gave up five hits in six innings. The right-hander, who also played at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has not allowed more than one earned run in each of his last seven starts.

Afterward, Washington manager Davey Johnson was asked if he noticed any nervousness or changes in Zimmermann's demeanor.

"Nope. He's always the same," Johnson said. "He's got great composure out there. He was throwing the heck out of the ball from the get-go."

Drew Storen and Sean Burnett each threw an inning of relief and Tyler Clippard pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

Washington center fielder Bryce Harper was a late scratch because of a stomach virus and was replaced by Corey Brown.

Brown led off the fourth by homering to left field, his first career hit giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. It was the start of a six-hit inning off Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf (3-7).

With one out, Michael Morse singled and took second on a balk, but was easily thrown out at home by right fielder Norichika Aoki on Adam LaRoche's single. The next batter, Tyler Moore, hit his sixth homer to left for a 3-0 lead.

"It was one of those games where Zimmermann was on," Wolf said. "I would have had to have thrown a shutout (to give the team a chance to win). Zimmermann is probably the most underrated pitcher. He has great numbers. I would have had to be near perfect just to get a no-decision."

Milwaukee's run came in the fifth on Rickie Weeks' 11th homer of the season.

Wolf gave up four earned runs on nine hits in seven innings, as the Brewers lost for the eighth time in nine games.

"It's a lack of the whole team getting together offensively and defensively," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "When you are not consistent in those two parts for a long time, it is hard to get on that winning streak. Sometimes we're pitching well and we are not scoring runs."

NOTES: Johnson, who is now 100-83 with Washington, said Harper will "more than likely" play Sunday. . Brown was 0 for 10 entering the game. He was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and played in his 11th game for the Nationals in the last two years. . Milwaukee backup catcher George Kottaras, who was designated for assignment on Thursday, could be traded to Oakland as soon as Sunday. Despite a rumor a deal was finalized Saturday afternoon, Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin said before the game that "nothing is finalized." . Weeks is 9 for 14 (.642) in his last 14 at-bats. . The Brewers are 4-11 against the NL East. . Johnson indicated infielder Chad Tracy might return Tuesday. He's been on the disabled list with a right groin tear since late May.

Romney supports Israel's right to defend itself against enemies

Romney in Jerusalem (Uriel Sinai/Getty Images)

JERUSALEM?Speaking against the backdrop of the historic Old City, Mitt Romney signaled he supports Israel's right to "defend itself" against its enemies and said "any and all measures" should be considered in the world's efforts to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

The Republican candidate said preventing a nuclear Iran should be America's "highest national security priority." And while he argued that diplomatic efforts should continue, Romney insisted that all options should be on the table in dealing with Iran, including a military strike.

"We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so," Romney said in an outdoor speech at Mishkenot Sha'anamim, a cultural center in Jerusalem. "In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you. "

Romney pushed back against criticism that those arguing in favor of leaving the military option open are "reckless and provocative and inviting war." "The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," Romney said.

He argued that the threat of military action would put more pressure on the ayatollahs in Iran, whom he accused of "testing our moral defenses."

"They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," Romney said. "My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away, and neither will my country."

In a message sure to appeal to Jewish voters, with whom Republicans are aiming to make inroads ahead of November's election, Romney repeatedly emphasized the "shared values" and "shared interests" between the United States and Israel.

Romney avoided directly criticizing President Barack Obama but slipped in a dig at his Democratic rival, arguing that public differences between the U.S. and Israel only embolden Israel's enemies.

"We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel, voice their criticisms.? And we certainly should not join in that criticism," Romney said. "Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel's adversaries.

By history and by conviction, our two countries are bound together.?No individual, no nation, no world organization, will pry us apart. And as long as we stay together and stand together, there is no threat we cannot overcome and very little that we cannot achieve."

Romney is dining with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday night. On Monday, he'll headline a major fundraiser for his campaign among top Jewish supporters, many of whom were in the audience for Sunday's speech. Among those in attendance: Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who has contributed millions of dollars to a pro-Romney super PAC.

On Monday afternoon, Romney heads to Poland, the final stop on his weeklong overseas tour.

Western Wind Energy: A Matter of Trust, and Value

    Tom Konrad CFA

Yesterday, I wrote about Western Wind Energy?s (TSXV:WND, OTC:WNDEF) plans to increase the 1603 cash grant for their Windstar wind farm. ?But that was not the only thing discussed in Monday?s conference call.

    Investor?Frustration

During the Q&A, many investors were concerned about Western Wind?s recent deal to acquire a 4 GW wind development pipeline from?Champlin/GEI Wind Holdings. ?

The concern was that the company would be issuing 8 million shares for the assets, but the company has revealed very little about the projects. ?With the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) set to expire at the end of 2012, many development projects will not be viable. ?In the absence of more information, the entire four gigawatts of potential could effectively be worthless.

On the other hand, the loss of the PTC?doubtlessly?affected the price paid for the assets. ?Champlin/GEI had invested ?almost $20 million? in the pipeline so far, and Western Wind is acquiring the pipeline for 8 million shares, at a?notional?value of $2.50 per share ($20 million.) ?At the current market price of only $1.25 a share, that?s $12.5 million, but if we consider Western Wind?s net asset value per share, which I put at over $5 per share, then the company is paying over $40 million for the assets.

What is the development pipeline worth? ?I think it?s safe to assume that most of the 4,000 MW of projects will not be built without the PTC. ?But the company has spoken of a near term project 75 MW project Hawaii, which they say is viable without the PTC. ?Given that Hawaii has?extremely?high?electricity?prices (most electricity is generated from oil) and an aggressive renewable energy mandate, it?s quite believable that a project in Hawaii would be economical without the PTC, despite the high cost of building anything in Hawaii.

The company has also claims that other projects in the pipeline will be viable without the PTC, but has given few details.

    ?Trust Me?

In response to investor?s questions during the conference call, President and CEO?Jeff Ciachurski was not particularly forthcoming. ?He says he cannot reveal more details about the projects in the pipeline because it would provide ammunition to opponents who want to reduce the price paid for wind power in the power purchase agreements he negotiates with utilities. ?Like investors? concerns about lack of transparency,?Ciachurski?s worries are valid. ?If the company tells investors it will receive a high rate of return on a project, utility customers will use that statement in front of regulators to try to reduce the amount the utility pays the company for?electricity. ?In other words, information is a two-edged sword.

From his tone in conference calls, Ciachurski seems offended by the implication that the Champlin/GEI deal will not be a good one for investors. ?He asks us to consider his track record, management?s ability to grow its assets and projects. ?The value of Western Wind?s projects has been validated in two ways: by the in-depth due diligence of the leading banks among the project lenders, and by the independent valuation the company commissioned last year, on which I based my $5 to $6 valuation of the stock.

Western Wind?s 2004 annual report shows only $200 thousand in liabilities on the balance sheet. ?On March 31, 2012, the most recent quarterly report shows $360 million in?liabilities. ? Over those seven years, the amount of money banks were willing to lend grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 187%. ?The book value of assets on the balance sheet also grew, from $3.3 million to almost $400 million, a 93% CAGR, although this greatly understates the growth in the value of Western Wind?s assets, since they are shown on the balance sheet at cost, not on a discounted cash flow basis.

The company has issued shares to fund some of this growth: shares outstanding rose six-fold, a CAGR of 27%, but not in a?dilutive?way. ?Even using just the balance sheet values of net assets, net assets per share grew from $0.29 to $1.85 (after the receipt of the reduced cash grant), or over 30% CAGR.

Given that track record, I?m willing to give?Ciachurski and his team the benefit of the doubt on the Champlin/GEI pipeline. ?I agree that?Western?Wind could reveal more about their pipeline than they are without tipping their hand in PPA negotiations, such as a list of projects giving their locations, potential megawatts, wind regime, and a rough idea of how much progress has been made on them.

In short, ?I don?t like the secrecy, but?I?m willing to put up with it because I?m able to buy Western Wind shares at a tiny fraction of what I see as their true value.

    Rumors

There are some who say any trust in?Ciachurski is misplaced. ?I?ve received comments on my articles saying that ??the executives have been plundering the company for years with impunity,? but if?such?plundering occurred on any large scale, we would not have seen the asset growth discussed above. ?I was also contacted by a Vancouver-based private investigator, who claimed to be working for a group of investors who had been swindled by Ciachurski. ?He asked me to publish his research linking?Ciachurski to convicted felons. ?But he was unable to substantiate the linkage, other than to repeat hearsay from unidentified individuals.

The company says such allegations are the work of a group of Vancouver based hedge funds, who have been buying the stock near current prices ($1.25 a share) and want to sell the company to a buyer like Algonquin Power (TSX:AQN, OTC:AQUNF), which made and offer of $2.50 a share last October. ?Even if the unsubstantiated allegations about?Ciachurski ?plundering the company? were true, the plundering has been minimal, since shareholder value has increased substantially during the ?supposed plundering. ?That?s hardly typical of a company with unscrupulous management: Shareholder value in such companies almost always goes down, not up. ?We only have to look to wind turbine and solar?manufacturers?to see many examples of honestly run renewable energy companies with rapidly dropping shareholder value.

Although I?m not averse to a quick profit (most of my stake, like that of the Vancouver hedge funds, was acquired around the current price), I agree with?Ciachurski that the best time to sell Western Wind will be after the company?s recently completed projects have been producing cash for a few quarters, and the Yabucoa solar project in Puerto Rico is complete. ?The company expects that each of the next seven quarters will be record quarters for revenue and earnings, and they can say this with a good degree of confidence. ?The revenue in question depends only on the wind blowing, the sun shining, and utilities with good credit ratings paying for the power generated.

At $1.25 a share, I don?t see much downside. ?If the Vancouver funds manage to force an immediate sale, I get a quick 2x profit. ?If?Ciachurski gets his hoped for sale in 2014, I get a 4x or even 8x profit after only a couple years. ?That seems worth the wait.

47 traffic accident fatalities | East Timor Law and Justice Bulletin

East Timor Legal News 28 July 2012 Source: The Dili Weekly 26/07/2012 Written by Venidora Oliveira - Forty seven (47) road fatalities were registered during the period beginning January to July of this year in the whole of Timor-Leste.

?Some were victims of collisions while others fell of motorbikes and other accidents resulted directly from bad road conditions such as in Ermera,? said National Traffic Authority Chief Antonio L. C Soares (17/07), in Caicoli, Dili.
Another factor was most drivers not having full understanding of road signage, he added.

Member of Parliament Jose Manuel Fernandes in his turn said compared to other nations, Timor-Leste casualties are very small.

?Relatively speaking, this is a very low number compared to other countries where the actual volume of traffic is also higher, we are constantly blaming the police but we ourselves do not seem to want to contribute, because many a time we do not obey traffic signs,? said the MP.

The MP also asked the DNTT not to issue driver?s licenses to people who did not have the necessary experience to drive vehicles on the road.

?People should be tested on whether they know traffic rules, and whether they have the necessary skills to drive, but mostly if they abide by the traffic code, before licenses are issued,? suggested the MP.

Marcotte: Single Motherhood OK, Not Mothers ... - Fathers & Families

Is it possible for a person to be able to write but not read? ?I doubt it, but must confess that this nonsense by Amanda Marcotte raises the issue (Slate, 7/24/12). ?Hers is the third in Slate?s series spawned by a New York Times article on the hazards of single motherhood.

You remember Amanda Marcotte. ?She?s the ubiquitous opiner who, long after it was clear that no sex ? much less forced sex ? had occurred in the case of the three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, claimed that the men had ?held down? their accuser ?and f**ked her.? ?Principled observers doubted the rape claim from Day Two when the men announced that no sex had occurred and allowed police unfettered access to the premises to gather whatever evidence they desired. ?Four months after her libel, the Attorney General of North Carolina took the unprecedented step of finding the three factually innocent of any and all wrongdoing, to Marcotte?s deafening silence. ?With that fealty to intellectual honesty in mind, we can now deal with Marcotte?s decidedly tepid embrace of single motherhood.

Unlike Katie Roiphe, whose failed attempt at the same was tactfully but authoritatively destroyed by Brad Wilcox, Marcotte claims, in a blizzard of made-up statistics, unsupported assertions, non sequiturs and straw-man arguments, that single mothers ?do not necessarily choose to be single.? ?True enough; some fathers die, some go to prison, etc. ?Usually none of that is Mom?s fault, but she?s single nevertheless. ?But how many mothers fall into those categories and how many fall into the ones Marcotte carefully avoids discussing ? divorce and single-mother childbearing?

The answer is that 70% of divorces are filed by women and they do so because they know they?ll get custody of the kids. ?So in fact a lot of those mothers ? the ones without a paramour waiting to marry them ? decide precisely to be single mothers. ?What about the 42% of children born to single mothers? ?That?s about 1.7 million children per year in the United States. ?Now, about half of those have co-habiting fathers, so, though unmarried, they?re not exactly single, but that?s still a hefty number of kids who are either born without a father close at hand or have a father taken from them by the tyranny of the family court system.

And yes, those are choices made by mothers. ?Some of those choices are defensible, some marriages truly are insupportable and sometimes even the pill fails, but Marcotte would like us to believe that, in some way, women have single motherhood foisted on them by??outrageous fortune,? I assume, and of course by men. ?But whatever her actual claims, which aren?t at all clear, for Marcotte, single motherhood must be someone?s fault other than single mothers themselves.

Marcotte?s article is so strange and so nutty that it?s paradoxically hard to criticize. ?How best to convey the secondary-school triviality of it? ?Let?s begin with her naked assertions.

Most women who have children have partners they intend to stay with.

A lot of the time, much-wanted relationships fall apart.

But in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.

That?s why only 41 percent of custodial parents receive child support.

Sixty-two percent of mothers parenting without a man in the house have been married, and most of the rest probably thought that marriage or a long-term commitment was in the cards.

Now, that?s not all of them, but I mention those five because they?re consecutive. ?Five unsupported claims in a row may be a record. ?Marcotte offers nothing at all to back them up and indeed, one of them is just flat wrong. ?Actually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 50.6% of custodial parents have a child support order, but the factual wrongness of her claim actually obscures its full inaccuracy. ?After all, men are far more likely to be ordered to pay child support than are women. ?The Census Bureau tells us that 55% of non-custodial fathers versus only 30% of non-custodial mothers pay child support and that fathers pay a larger percentage of what they owe than do mothers. ?But Marcotte knows none of that which again urges that question about writing and reading.

Then there?s her claim that ?in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.? ?Really? ?Marcotte gives no facts to back up the claim and a remarkable amount of solid social science casts considerable doubt on it, but again, she? have to have read articles from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being data, Sanford Braver?s ?Divorced Dads,? much of Kathryn Edin?s work, reports from Child Trends, Brinig and Allen?s study of divorce, and countless others. ?It?s impossible to conclude that Marcotte reads at all, otherwise she?d know that fathers of all income levels, racial and ethnic categories, religions, etc., overwhelmingly desire continuing relationships with their kids. ?That?s why fathers don?t tend to file for divorce and mothers do; fathers know they?ll lose their children and mothers know they won?t. ?Divorced fathers are far more likely to remain involved with their children and pay their child support if mothers don?t stand in the way, so many of those who lose contact were shoved aside by their ex-wives and the courts that abet their every move.

In the face of much social science that disproves her thesis, Marcotte opts for baseless assertion that agrees with little but a carefully constructed anti-father zeitgeist.

Marcotte eventually gets down to grappling with the fact that the poor have lower marriage rates than the more affluent and better educated. ?According to her, that actually reflects the superiority of the poor?s commitment to marriage. ?Yes, you read that right.

Wilcox assumes that marriage success is due to commitment to the value of marriage, and because blue state progressives with children break it off less frequently, they must just like marriage more. But?a study at UCLA demonstrates he has it backwards: ?Poor people hold more traditional values toward marriage and divorce than people with moderate and higher incomes,? that is to say, they?re more ?marriage-minded?.

In the first place, Wilcox assumes no such thing. ?What he does is what so many other observers have done; he simply states that the poor tend to not get married and, particularly when kids come along, that tends to keep them poor. ?I?m perfectly willing to accept that, when asked their views on the subjects of marriage and children, the poor may tend to express more conservative ones than do the better off. ?But whatever happens in the deep recesses of their hearts, it?s what they do that matters. ?Children of single mothers don?t do as well as those of intact families because they?re children of single mothers, not because of how their mothers answer a survey. ?But to Marcotte, the reverse is true; being a single mother means that you value marriage while being married means you don?t.

In his answer to Katie Roiphe, Brad Wilcox asked a question similar to one I had asked in my review of her article.

Surely a progressive like Roiphe should be concerned about all this, rather than dismissing the recent?New York Times?news story on the marriage divide in America as a ?puritanical and alarmist rumination on the decline of the American family.? Since when is it puritanical and alarmist in progressive circles to raise the red flag about a major driver of social and economic inequality?

Given the fact that single mothers and their children are far more likely to live in poverty than are their married peers and their children, what?s a liberal/progressive doing plumping for single motherhood? ?Since the children of single mothers are much more likely than the children of intact families to remain stuck on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, why do ?progressives? like Roiphe and Marcotte encourage women to have children without a man to help support and care for them?

Wilcox asked the question and Marcotte responded to his article, but tellingly, she failed to answer it. ?Although it?s an obvious criticism of her and her article, Roiphe completely refused to address it. ?By now, the reason should be clear ? they can?t. ?The simple fact is that the Left?s appropriate concern for the welfare of the poor and working classes is on a collision course with feminism?s disdain for fathers and marriage. ?Fatherlessness and non-marital childbearing condemn many women and children to lives on the edge. ?It?s time leftists made a choice.

But I don?t expect Amanda Marcotte to make the hard decisions required when two ?isms? collide. ?My guess is she doesn?t even know there?s an accident already in progress. ?After all, to know that would take some reading.

Thanks to Glenn for the heads-up.

Australia loses to Brazil at Olympics basketball

An Australian side lacking NBA star centre Andrew Bogut came up short in its Olympic opener, falling to a Brazil team with four NBA standouts 75-71 on Sunday in round-robin Group B play.

Leandrinho Barbosa scored 16 points, Marcelinho Huertas 15 and Anderson Varejao 12 for the South Americans, who needed two free throws from Huertas with five seconds remaining to seal victory.

It was the sort of game where Bogut, a 7-foot-2 big man with the NBA Golden State Warriors, could have made a difference for the Boomers against Varejao and other large NBA rivals.

"He is a difference maker. He is a game changer," Australian coach Brett Brown said.

"You miss a major defensive weapon. He's among the top three to five centres in the world when he's healthy. The players we have are physical and mobile but they are not 7-foot-2."

Bogut suffered a broken left ankle in an NBA game last January and had been bothered by nagging right elbow and hand injuries for years before that.

Bogut did offer some words of encouragement from afar, posting the Twitter message: "Forget the last one, remember the next one."

Brazil played an up-tempo and physical style that tested the Aussies.

"It was a tough game. That's how it's going to be in the Olympics," Varejao said. "You can have a lot of ups and downs like we did. We knew what was going to happen, pushing, provocations. But when the game is like that I like that."

Patrick Mills, a guard who is an NBA teammate of Brazil's Tiago Splitter on the San Antonio Spurs, led the Aussies wth 20 points while Joe Ingles added 15 points and David Andersen contributed 14 for the Boomers, who next face Spain and confident say they can upset an NBA-filled team led by NBA star Pau Gasol.

"No question at all," Mills said. "We take a lot of positives from this game. It was good preparation for Spain. We're disappointed we got the loss but we still believe we can do something special."

Brazil led 36-35 at half-time and opened the third quarter with a 16-4 run, back-to-back driving layups by NBA big man Nene Hilario and Splitter capping the run to give their side a 52-39 edge, their biggest of the game.

But Australia scored the next eight points and battled to the finish in the fourth quarter, an Ingles bank shot with 29 seconds remaining pulling them within 73-71. A Mills foul after a failed steal attempt led to Huertas hitting the deciding free throws.

"Our guys showed great resolve," Brown said. "We didn't quit. We had some runs in us when the game was going the other way on us."

2 Western photographers freed from Syria captivity

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Two Western photojournalists in Syria were held captive for a week by Islamic militants before being rescued by Syrian rebels, one of the men said Friday.

Jeroen Oerlemans, a prominent Dutch photographer, told Business News Radio of the Netherlands that he is not sure which group held him and John Cantlie of Britain, but said he is sure they were not Syrian.

"They all claimed they came from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh and Chechnya, and they said there was some vague 'emir' at the head of the group," he said in a seven-minute interview from Turkey, where the men were resting after their ordeal. Oerlemans was also recovering from two gunshot wounds suffered during an escape attempt.

His account would seem to add weight to reports that foreign Islamic fighters are going into Syria to support the rebel side.

The Associated Press could not reach the men, who were expected to return home within days, for more details of their ordeal.

Oerlemans told Business News Radio that he and Cantlie entered Syria on July 19, and were captured almost immediately.

"You go with a donkey caravan over the border," he said. "It went left, we went right and walked into a camp of 20 tents and in no time we had a circle of men around us with Kalashnikovs and we were taken captive."

The militants accused the men of working for the CIA and took their equipment and documents, he said.

Oerlemans said it soon became clear that their captors planned to seek ransom, so the photographers tried to escape. They were quickly intercepted and Oerlemans was shot in the foot and thigh, he said. His captors bandaged his wounds but kept the two men handcuffed and blindfolded after that, he said.

"I was wounded, but the bullets missed all the vital parts, and I'm frisky as a puppy and enormously happy that I've survived it all, that it ended well," he said.

On Friday morning they were told they would be moved to another location when a group of Syrian rebels stormed the tent and put the photographers in trucks.

Suddenly four soldiers from the Syrian Free Army entered the camp and asked them how long they had been held.

"They took us with them like a bunch of gangsters," Oerlemans was quoted in a separate interview with NRC Handelsblad. "Shooting in the air we rode out of there."

Uri Rosenthal, the Netherlands' foreign minister, said Dutch diplomats were traveling to Oerlemans to help him get home. The British Foreign Office cited privacy concerns in not commenting.

Oerlemans is well-known in the Netherlands, having won two national photography awards.

Cantlie's LinkedIn page describes him as a freelance journalist and photographer with 20 years' experience in "hostile environment reportage." It says his clients have included British newspapers such as The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph and The Sun; GQ and FHM magazines; and the BBC.

U.S. rental vacancy rate falls to lowest in decade

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The share of empty U.S. homes for rent fell to its lowest level in a decade during the second quarter, a troubling sign for many Americans whose budgets have been strained by rising rents.

The residential rental vacancy rate declined to 8.6 percent from 8.8 percent in the January-March period, the Commerce Department said on Friday. The second-quarter reading was the lowest since 2002.

The tight rental market could keep pressure on rents despite general weakness in the economy.

The average asking rent actually edged down to $716 a month in the second quarter, $5 cheaper than in the prior three-month period. Still, second quarter asking rents were about 5 percent higher than a year earlier.

Five years after the housing bubble burst, the United States is in the midst of a housing affordability crisis. Home prices have fallen a third from their peaks, but many Americans cannot benefit because they cannot get a mortgage.

With credit tight, many consumers have no choice but to rent. Others who can afford to buy are also renting, because they view real estate as a lousy investment. As demand has increased, rents in some cities have jumped by double-digit percentage rates.

However, economists do not believe the rental market is tightening enough to ignite inflation pressures.

Also, stronger demand for rental apartments is seen helping to stabilize the housing market as builders break more ground on multifamily housing projects.

In a positive sign for the housing market, the homeownership rate edged up to 65.5 percent in the second quarter from 65.4 percent in the prior period, the Commerce Department said.

The homeowner vacancy rate dropped to 2.1 percent, the lowest since the first quarter of 2006, from 2.2 percent in the first quarter.

The homeownership rate peaked at 69.4 percent in 2004 at the height of a housing market boom fueled by cheap credit.

A 3-Step Process to Finding Public Speaking Gigs to Build Your ...

Author: Christine Gallagher | Total views: 95 Comments: 0
    Word Count: 773 Date:

While I'm known for coaching entrepreneurs on how to grow a business online, I'm also fond of telling my clients and students to get out from behind the computer once in a while too!

Yes, technology can be fantastic, but it's vitally important to connect with people face to face as well. Public speaking is a powerful way to accomplish this, and is something I did a good amount of early on in my business especially. Because of its many benefits, I continue to seek out these opportunities today, and one of the biggest questions I receive around this is about HOW to find these speaking engagements.

I consider it to be a simple 3-step process, and just by following these steps, you'll be well on your way to an abundance of gigs.

    1. Start Looking!

One big piece of advice: if you are new to speaking and/or business, don't be too picky in the beginning. I often see people rule out lots of opportunities because they believe they won't be able to reach their exact ideal client by speaking to that particular group. To begin gaining momentum, you HAVE to let this go. You never know who you will meet or connect with or what opportunities will come just from you getting OUT there in some shape or form.

I've spoken for many seemingly "random" groups and associations in my career, and have always been amazed at what comes out of it--additional ideal speaking gigs, clients, sales, word of mouth, media attention--so keep an open mind here. Some places to begin: your local Small Business Administration offices or Development Centers, local civic groups such as the Rotary, local organizations' annual conferences, the local Chamber of Commerce, local trade organizations, national conferences, even the local library (that's where I got started!)

    2. Create Your Speaker Sheet

This is what you will share with those who have booked you to speak, and sometimes, with those who are still considering it. In its simplest form, this sheet usually has your contact information, photo, the title of your talk, and some bullets about what the audience will learn from you.

Additionally, some speakers choose to include information about books or publications they've been featured in, as well as testimonials or a listing of clients they've worked with.

    3. Reach Out and Ask

Last, search Google or the association or group's website for a contact person to call or email and inquire. It's important at this point to simply only ask if they accept outside speakers, nothing more. Here's an example of what I have sent in the past:

"Hello. I'm an online marketing and social media expert and speaker, specializing in topics for women entrepreneurs. Do you accept outside speakers? My signature talk is called 'The 6 Simple Steps to Kick Start Your Social Media Success.' If so, please let me know?"

This opens up the conversation, but first you need to know if you've even got a shot. Don't be discouraged at the "No's"--keep asking, and make it a habit to reach out to new possible speaking leads consistently every month.

Also, don't forget to "work" your connections! Many times my own speaking gigs came about because I reached out to people I knew were part of certain organizations. They were already acquaintances or colleagues of mine, and I simply let them know of my interest in presenting for their group.

Finally, there is definitely something to be said for being highly visible online. By regularly participating in social media, keeping your blog updated, sending a newsletter and posting content such as articles on the web, you increase the chances of others not only seeing you as an expert, but of reaching out to connect you to speaking gigs. In fact, I've secured several local speaking engagements in the past just by consistently showing up on sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, engaging with others there, and sharing information of value.

The best part of simply getting started seeking out public speaking engagements is the snowball effect. While you'll be doing much of the pursuing in the beginning, once you start to get out there, you'll begin getting approached with other speaking opportunities. This was certainly my experience as well, and after a while, you can decide to be a bit choosier.

The bottom line? More speaking means more clients, more customers, and more sales? so what are you waiting for?

Tropical Parks Fail to Protect Animals and Plants [Slide Show]

ENDANGERED PREDATOR: Even forest reserves have not been enough to prevent the decline of the tiger in countries like India. Image: ? Ashish Gautamm / Flickr

India's Supreme Court has temporarily banned tourism in tiger reserves. The problem? All those hotels and shops built within the protected areas for the tourists are cutting down on actual forest habitat for the endangered big cats. In addition, local governments have failed to create buffer zones of slightly less degraded forest around the parks to enable the rare tigers to thrive.

The tall trees of such a protected swath of tropical forest often rise like a wall from a denuded hillside or plain. Such stands of relatively untouched trees are meant as shelters for the rich array of plant and animal species, such as the tiger, that once spread throughout vast regions of tropical jungle. But a new scientific survey that largely agrees with the Indian court's ruling finds that the more than 16,000 independent parks and reserves around the world protected by humans from humans may not prove a long-term refuge. Interviews with scientists and other experts to assess the relative health of some 60 protected areas of tropical forest in 36 different nations reveal that roughly half are continuing to lose unique species of plants and animals.

View a slide show of some of the threats to reserves and unique species.

The problem appears to be the degradation of surrounding forestland that remains unprotected, according to the research of some 261 ecologists, biologists and other scientists published online in Nature on June 25 (Scientific American is a part of Nature Publishing Group).

The scientists surveyed their colleagues to assess the relative health of more than 30 different groups of species from apex predators, like the tiger, to vines and plants that grow on top of other plants in African, American and Asian reserves. The reserves themselves ranged in size from as little as 160 hectares to 3.6 million hectares?but size was no predictor of health.

Instead, the most important thing that determined the health of these areas was the state of the lands surrounding them. Eighty-five percent of the reserves saw the surrounding lands cleared of trees or suffering from other significant impacts. In addition, many reserves themselves saw their own jungle canopies thin out: Trees were cut down for removal and sale or to make room for hotels or even increased hunting.

As a result, the number of exotic plants and animals as well as freshwater fish declined in most reserves. But some species benefited, including trees that specialize in filling disturbed ecosystems as well as human diseases that emerge from interactions with wild animals?so-called zoonoses such as Ebola. "The fates of tropical protected areas will be determined by environmental changes both within and around the reserves," the researchers wrote in Nature, noting that, essentially, protected areas needed to be better protected. "It is not enough to confine such efforts to reserve interiors while ignoring their surrounding landscapes."

    Harman Kardon CL

Harman Kardon is a fixture in the audio world, blending unique visual design and high- quality performance to make stand-out products like the SoundSticks III PC speakers ($169.95, 4.5 stars). Aside from a couple of in-ear models several years ago, headphones have not been part of the speaker manufacturer's lineup, so the Harman Kardon CL ($199.95 direct), is something of a debut for the established speaker company. This well-designed pair of headphones offer solid audio performance and, like most Harman Kardon products, looks good doing it. The headphones are reminiscent of the lineup from Bowers & Wilkins, another speaker icon that has recently tried its hand at consumer-level headphones. The CL is a strong first attempt, but it has some fierce competition in the $200 price range.

    Design
As mentioned, a quick look at the CL, and one headphone pair immediately comes to mind: The Bowers & Wilkins P5 Mobile Hi-Fi Headphones ??(4.5 stars). Both pairs are on-ear (supra-aural) headphones with rectangular earpads and a design that feels simultaneously retro?in the space age sense?and modern, thanks to the use of black leather and metallic accents. However, it's the Bowers & Wilkins P3 ($199.99, 4 stars) that the Harman Kardon CL ?matches up with in terms of price. And for this price, you get a few more extras than you do from B&W.

The CL, which folds down flat like many modern headphones, features a removable cable?which helps increase the value of the pair, as you can replace the cable without having to replace the headphones if it's the only thing that is damaged?as well as a removable headband. The metallic headband acts as a sort of shock mount for the secondary padded leather headband that sits underneath it, which is the part that actually touches your head.

Unlike most headbands, the CL's metallic and leather combo more or less adjusts itself to your head; you needn't fiddle with it to get the right fit. The size of the metallic band makes all the difference in the world here?a small and large band are included?so if they are uncomfortable at first, try switching out the bands. Generally speaking, the fit is very secure and comfortable. But over longer listening periods, the earcups can feel as if they're pressing too firmly against your ears. If you wear glasses, this can be a bit uncomfortable, but not so much that it's a deal-breaker.

The CL ships with a far nicer case than the equally-priced P3 . The P3's is sturdy and small, but it's sometimes a struggle to fit the headphones completely into its tight confines, whereas the CL's case is less deep, but larger. It looks like a black leather daily planner from some angles. This is possible because, when the CL's earcups fold down flat, the headphones become quite narrow, and there's no need for a deep case. The P3's case probably protects the headphones better, if you manage to stuff them entirely in there, but the CL's carrying pouch is one of the classiest accessories we've seen accompany headphones, so that's got to count for something.

The iOS controls and microphone built into the cable, along the left ear, allow for answering and ending calls, as well as adjusting the volume and navigating tracks. Call clarity is fine.

In an era dominated by in-canal earphones and bulkier over-the-ear (circumaural) headphones, like the Beats by Dr. Dre ?(4 stars), Harman Kardon and B&W seem to be dialing back the bulk and focusing primarily on simplicity and style. Thankfully, both manufacturers are also both quite focused on audio performance.

    Performance
The Harman Kardon CL packs a nice punch?rich, deep bass without going overboard, combined with crisp highs and plenty of definition in the mids. Unsurprisingly, the same can be said about Harman Kardon's excellent Soundsticks III , a PCMag favorite?though those are computer speakers. The CL does produce the slightest hint of distortion at absolute maximum volume on some tracks with seriously deep bass, but the distortion is so negligible and barely noticeable?and that listening level is so unsafe for human ears?we're not going to dwell on this other than to briefly mention it. Basically the CL offers powerful, clean playback for 95 percent of the music out there at absolute maximum volume, and all music at just one volume notch below, which is still a higher volume level than you should be listening at.

The Knife's "Silent Shout" is the minor distortion culprit, but again, the distortion is so minor, it's nearly undetectable. At a hair below maximum volume, it disappears completely, and the bass response is quite deep, resonant, and intense. This song's powerful electronic kick drum beat is aided by the clarity and crispness of the high-mids and highs the headphones produce.

The CL really shines on classical music, like John Adams' piece, "The Chairman Dances." The pulsating brass lines are punchy, while the corresponding parts for the lower-register strings are delivered with an appropriate amount of resonance?nothing booming, but nothing too thin, either.

Pop, rock, and hip hop all sound fantastic on the CL?David Bowie's "Golden Years" lets the excellent, hard-panned guitar work shine while the headphones still provide plenty of clarity for his excellent vocals, and just the right amount of thump and low-end from the rhythm section. Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" has a beat that the CL delivers with an intensity that at times feels like it could match a massive club PA system, but clarity always seems to be the priority, so with all of these genres, things are never muddy.

This brings us to the primary difference between the B&W P3 and the Harman Kardon CL. The CL's clarity comes from its crisp highs and well-defined mids. There's some exaggeration there, for sure, but it's not over-the-top and it never sounds harsh. The P3 never sounds bad, either, but it delivers a much different sound signature. Both pairs have substantial bass response, but the P3 couples its low-end with far less sculpting in the high frequencies. Side by side on the same tracks, you might think the P3 even sounds a bit muffled, but on its own, it sounds fantastic, as well?it simply doesn't boost the highs and mids with the same intensity as the CL. If you've whittled your shopping down to these two pairs, that is the primary difference between their sonic performance.

Perhaps $200 is not within your budget, but you'd still like a pair of on-ear headphones with iPhone controls. Luckily, there are plenty of choices, though you will have to take a step down a bit in terms of audio performance. The Senta-40 Wood headphones by C. Crane ?(3.5 stars)? and SOL Republic Tracks ?(4 stars) are both solid, less- expensive options. If you're looking for an in-ear pair that delivers similar performance to the CL and P3?we've yet to test Harman Kardon's new earphone pair, but the Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ?(4.5 stars) are, unsurprisingly, similar in sound signature to the CL and P3.

If I personally had to choose between the P3 and the CL, however, it would be tough. I do prefer the added bit of crisp edge the CL packs in the highs, but it is noticeably less comfortable over long-term listening sessions than the P3?especially if you wear glasses like I do. Both pairs, however, are worth your serious attention if you're looking in the $200 range.
