2011's The Adventures of Tintin didn't do so well in the States, making only about $78 million at the box office. For a movie that cost as estimated $130 million to make, that's the kind of performance that make studio execs wake up in the middle of the night drenched in cold sweat.
Luckily, the movie did much better overseas, making nearly four times the domestic amount ($296 million).
The sequel was sort of in question, but what Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson want, they usually get. So, it looks like The Adventures of Tintin 2 is moving forward with Jackson taking over for Spielberg in the director's chair.
According to the Belgian website RTBF (via Bleedingcool), Jackson will shoot the motion capture part of Tintin 2 sometime in 2014 for a 2015 release. That means he'll be doing all that while prepping the two other Hobbit movies for release as well.
If Jackson wants Tintin 2 to have a better domestic box office than the first movie, he may want to consider trimming the running time of the second movie to something more manageable to its target audience. Sitting still for nearly two hours and young children don't usually go well together.
