Recently, we were checking our Twitter stream and came across a new article about colorectal cancer, titled ?More Young People Getting Colorectal Cancer.? While this title may be alarming, it?s important to look at all of the facts.
According to the American Cancer Society, the overall diagnosis rate for this disease has been decreasing every year. Simultaneously, though, from 1998-2007 the rate of diagnosis for those aged 18-49 has increased by 2.1%. This may be because of lifestyle, ?including bad eating habits, lack of exercise and obesity? some of the answer probably also lies in genetics and environmental factors.?
Traditionally, colorectal cancer is a disease associated with those over 50. This increase means that some physicians may initially misdiagnose symptoms that are indeed due to colorectal cancer. According to research presented at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, this can mean that younger patients may have a more severe prognosis (disease presentation) at initial diagnosis.
At the same time, though, in a recent study of data, ?patients under age 50 had better than or equal survival to those 50 and older, which may in part be explained by their overall health. Early evidence suggests that younger patients are able to tolerate more aggressive cancer therapies.?
If you have any concerns about some symptoms you may have noticed, you may want to talk to your physician and bring up your thoughts. The Colon Cancer Alliance?can serve as a great resource for information and support, too.
