The two naturally thrilling and grotesquely over-the-top, the feature length debut by Justin Kurzel is certainly unforgettable and at times unnervingly mesmerizing. Based on the accurate story of Australias ?Body In Barrels? murders, ?Snowtown? is structured just like ?Animal Kingdom, ? using an adolescent teenager to be a gateway into an entire world and family (of sorts) thats profoundly disturbing.
When we first meet Jamie Vlassakis (newcomer Lucas Pittaway who looks nearly the same as James Franco) he and his two brothers have already been through one trauma, surviving (with the strange emotionless stoicism) the actual sexual abuse by the neighbor. Their mother Elizabeth (Louise Harris) becomes to her boyfriend Bob (a terrifying Daniel Henshall) to do something positive about it but little does she understand what lurks between his cozy smile and easy (along with sometimes unnerving) attitude. Sensing a vulnerable boy who is able to easily be moulded, John takes Jamie under his wing and little by little draws the teen into his dark and key world.
Through humiliation and intimidation, John reveals himself with regard to who he truly is to Jamie: a psychopath of the best order, and a raging homophobe. John slowly and gradually pushes the sensitive Jamies patience for violence and torture through a number of increasingly hard to observe scenes. Once he has cowed and also desensitized Jamie enough, he brings him directly into his grander schemes as well as meticulously murdering sexual predators, junkies and anyone otherwise John deems unworthy. With a ?CSI? worthy amount of research, John tracks his potential victims over a massive chart and however coldly stating that ?No on cares? about these people, disposing of the bodies in barrels of acid that happen to be hidden in an deserted bank vault.
Terrified for his own safety as well as that of his mother and also brothers, Jamie continues to comply with John against his superior judgment. During the first ?kill? that will hes brought along with regard to, Jamie steps outside since the toenails of the target start being removed along with pliers. A furious John calls him in to witness the rest of the killing and Jamie, eventually overcome by lengthy torture, strangles the person himself to be able to spare him anymore ache. But that struggle between brutal violence and a deeper psychological breakdown of both John and Jamie will be reflected in Kurzels method of the film itself.
?Snowtown? could certainly be referred to as brave, but its also wildly uneven. The first half in the film, in which Jamie is slowly groomed and presented into Johns world can be easily the best the main film. Shot in hand-held style in the ugly, earthy browns of a great Australian lower class community, watching John setting the bait and Jamie taking it really is intensely compelling and unsettling all as well. So when the film shifts to the graphic depictions of the killings ? the very first of which, partially described above, caused a massive wave of walkouts ? feel superfluous, indulgent and unnecessary. As a character, John is already terrifying, more so because your depths of his depravity are left largely to imagination. However, when we see John inside the act, the mystery of what steps his moral code provides fallen is disappointingly solved.
